I started building this last May and the weather stayed crappy for half the summer (and the summers are short here) and I am still working on it now lol

It's a 36x50 Menards pole barn building, but unlike a pole barn with the girts laying flat on the outside of the posts, this is a bookshelf building. It's a hell of a lot more labor positioning the girts between the posts but it made insulating and finishing the inside a breeze!

I basically built the building by myself (thus the reason for it still not being finished.) My son and a friend of his helped with the rafters and purlins.

Most of the inside is finished except for the bottom two feet which I couldn't insulate and OSB until the concrete was poured. I didn't pour concrete until this Spring because by the time I got most of the building complete, Winter had arrived. I didn't want to have to cover or heat the building until the concrete cured, so I just waited for Spring. The concrete is done now and I will begin the insulating and finishing the last of the wall board on my next days off.

During the winter I ran all of the electrical wiring for outlets and wired up 12, 8ft florescent lights. They sure make working in there at night very nice.

I will post more pics after I get the rest of the interior finished and my workbench built so I can get all of my tools organized.

This is a great site, and thanks for letting me post my garage project!IMG00008-20100604-2029.jpg

Nice looking building,teleman37. I am planning a similar build..32'x56', also with the bookshelf girts. Have any "hints or helps" for the novice for a build like yours? Thanks.

Great build!! Take your time finishing it. Shortcuts and rushing will mess you up. It really looks great!!

I lived in Wyoming for 30 years so I can vouch for fast winters that sneak up on you if the month has an "R" in it. Very nice effort so far!

RBurke...The only real hints I can give you is when you are installing your girts, use a ladder as you get higher. I know that sounds retarded but I learned the hard way....you will be tempted to climb your girts instead of getting the ladder. It caused them to sag in the middle. I didn't walk on them in the center, just next to the post and they still sagged. I don't know if this was from climbing on them, or if it's just gravity causing the board to sag on an 8ft span. Either way, I ended up putting spacers in to keep the girts level.
