Your contractor probably buys his doors at a big box store and has no idea how to source a special door. Was the larger door called out on the plans? Make him work for it but expect to pay more.

The local commercial steel door supplier carries 48". I used one in my shop remodel, the one o the right. The one on the left is the existing door, a 36" steel.

Just be aware of how far the door swings in. You won’t be able to put anything closer than 4’ from the wall. I have a 36” door along one side of the garage. It requires the car be parked 3’ from the wall. I actually used a marker to mark the swing of the door on the floor. That way I can easily see how close I can get the car to the wall without having to worry about the door hitting the car.
Why doesn't your door swing out? I guess snow. The OP might not have a real snow problem in NM. Plus swing out doors are more secure if done right.

Yes I think snow is definitely an issue in northern climates. Also maybe hinge location. I’m not sure but the hinges are usually on the side that the door swings to. If the door opened out I’m thinking the hinges would have to be on the outside. Also as far as swing goes thick walls has something to do with this also.

I have a 48 between the parking area and the working area of my shop and would not have anything smaller. My question is when does what the contractor likes have any bearing on what the owner wants installed? He works for you.
