They have tilt switches in them that on some shut them down and require the operator to continuously hold a button, etc. (override) while operating it out of "range" until it is back in "range". Other units go to "turtle" mode until back on a level footing. Its the slope that is the problem.

All have an emergency release valve of some sort located at the base (doesn't help much if you're up in the bucket...but you should always have someone on the ground as lookout).

Hope he has the owners manual in the bucket.

There should be an override switch that has to be held while using the controls to allow you to get out of the tilt condition.

a. he should have called the rental place. b. at least he had his cellphone. i have a 60 foot JLG, I was 40 feet up trimming some trees when the fuel pump circuit breaker popped (found that out later). Cell-phone was flat so I couldn't call the wife. I was about 100 yards from the front door. All I could do is lay down and take a nap. When I woke up about an hour later, the clouds were closing in and I could see lightning in the distance. The wife came out and wondered why I wasn't answering my phone. after screaming at me for a couple minutes, I talked her through turning the descent valves and as soon as I looked in the control box, I saw the problem. 5 minutes later, the rain started...

Is this designed for off concrete use? If it is, it has a plate on the drive axle hubs that you remove. Usually held on with 2 bolts. Take this plate off and the lift becomes free wheeling. This is for when the lift loses its engine. You can now tow, or winch it.
