Yes thats right folks my wife and two young girls (4 and 6 ) refer to my new garage as Man Town!!!!!

I am finally getting what every car guy has always dreamed of.... a shop seperate from the house and all the kids bikes and everything else house and yard related.

I am not able to hammer a nail straight, so I am having to have my garage built by a freind who is a general contractor. The garage is going to be 36x28 with two 10 x 8 overhead doors and a 3' door. The foundation and floor was poured last week. The framers arrive on Monday.

The plan is to get the building up this year and then save some money over the winter to have the electrical, insulation and sheetrock done in the spring.

Thanks for the compliments on our new house. We really love it.The existing 36x26 garage is nothing to speak of now. It's not even insulated and sheetrocked. Once the new garage is done I will finish the old garage. It is a custom built cape style house that was built about six years ago. It is on two acres that has a nature preserve in the back and side yard. That means there will never be neighbors behind or to the right of me.

As for the hot rod, that is my 47 Ford coupe. We really have fun cruising in it and going to cruise nights etc....... It is an all steel car that I painted four years ago, has a ZZ4 smallblock with an automatic and all the other toys you would expect in todays street rods.

Thanks for the interest...I will be updating as things happen:bounce:

I don't get out to your area very much. Just on the way out to GoodGuys in Rhinebeck. We travel out RT 44. Have you ever come my way? Marks cruise night in East Granby had over 800 cars last Monday night.

Marks is a bit of a ride for me, especially on a Monday night when I still have to go to work early the next day. Marks is one of the largest regularly scheduled cruises in CT.

Well the framers showed up right on time this morning. They did a great job and got alot further along than I would have predicted. They tell me they will be all done tomarrow with all the trusses in place, have all the plywood on and the windows and walk in door hung......

I am told the roofing materials are to be delivered on Wed. and scheduled to be done early next week with the siding to follow:bounce:

This is so exciting I can't stand it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please excuse my ignorance, but I assume you mean a 3' door, not a 3" door, but it looks 3' square. Am I missing something?

Thorin, you are correct it is a 3' door. In the pic what you are seeing is the bottom of the opening, when they started with the plywood they went over the top of the door and will cut it out later. There is also a bit of an overhang in the garage door openings that they need to trim back a bit.

Day two of the framing and the boys did not disapoint me one bit. Even though we had heavy rains here today they came to work.
All the trusses are now up, and every thing is sheethed in plywood except for the front of the roof. Tomorrow they are returning to finish the plywood and hang the windows and door.

Nice looking place you have. You're making good progess on the new building. I can't believe you let the kids bikes be parked in the same garage as that car. It just doesn't seem right. At least that problem is being fixed now.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the comments( about the garage and car).

The roofers were here today and did a great job. I wasn't able to get any pics as it was dark by the time I got home from work. I will post more soon. The siding is supposed to get done next week followed by the garage doors.

As for the 47, yes it's hard to believe that I had my girls tricycles and bikes in between the coupe and my wifes mini van in the old 2 car garage. Now that we have moved and have the 3 car it's nice to have some extra space.
I did paint the car myself, I have been an auto body tech/ painter for the last fifteen years. I do a fair amount of side work painting flames and graphics. I am PPG Master Certified. Which really just means that I go every two years(for 10 years) to school at my local PPG training center.
I have been very fortunate to have my car featured in three magazines as well as winning a few awards at some major shows. Non of that means that I am the best painter in the world, just that I have been LUCKY enough to have been noticed a little bit. There are guys out there with alot more talent than me.

BC.. any questions you might have please feel free to PM me. I will get back to you as soon as I can

Well it's been a week I know but I did go away for the long holiday weekend. I'm back and I have updates.

The roof was done last week and looks great. The siding is underway right now.

My father went to Home Depot and bought me Rustolium Pro floor coating. I have to wait a couple more weeks for the floor to finish curing.

That is a NICE garage! I wish mine would have been done that fast. Mine took my contractor 7 months to get done! Sweet car too! Great job with it......

Well yesterday I had 20 ton of 3/4" stone for the driveway leading to the new garage. I am going to have it paved but for now it was more cost effective to go this route. $340.00 for 20 ton of stone vs. $3200 for paving. A no brainer when spending this kind of money all at once.

The siding is almost done, and I think looks great. It does not match my house exactly, but is very close. Both have a tan vynal siding but the house actually has wood tones impregnated into the vynal to make it look like a real wood siding. The original owners gave me some info on the siding but more importantly told me how expensive it was. It is beautiful but I would never spend that kind of $$$$ on the garage siding.

Next up are the garge doors. To the right of the service door I am going to pour a pad for a 1947 Texaco gas pump I have. I can't wait to see that thing lit up at night, globe and all. In a couple of weeks I have a friend coming over with his back ho to dig the trench for the water and power.

Plus, the gravel will make a good base when the time comes for the asphalt. :)

Not bad at all - I really like your property layout.

How deep was the foundation poured & was there a specific reason for the roof pitch being on different angles?

The back yard has a slight grade down to the rear of the property. So the foundation wall in the back is about three feet above ground.

The roof pitch is common in New England. It is referred to as a Salt Box. I have lived here all my life so forgive me if it is common in your area too. My wife and I decided to go with that because it goes along with the varied roof lines of the house and attatched garage. The ceiling is 10', with a slight taper at the very back to 8'

Well the siding is done and the doors were installed on Friday. I spent Sunday raking the stone a little more. I also installed the landscape timbers to keep the stone out of the grass, when it grows.

In a couple of weeks I have a friend with a back hoe coming over to dig the trench for the water and electrical conduit.

It is going to have wait until spring for the wiring, insulation and sheetrock.:

Thanks for all the interest guys. I will definately be posting more as I progress. In a couple weeks I am going to pour a cement pad in front of the service door and to the right of it. I will be mounting a 1947 Texaco gas pump on the pad. That is why there is the blank spot to the right of the service door. My plan is to have the pump lighting (globe and all) on a timer so it goes on and off by itself everyday:bounce:

Well guys the culmination of 14 years of planning, dreaming and hoping along with alot of saved pennies has finally started to pay off.

You see I got married in 1992 and in the fall of that year I went to a automotive swap meet here in Connecticut with my dad. In the spot next to us was this guy selling a really nice 1947 Texaco gas pump. My father bought it on the spot for a low $250.00. Of course as soon as we got home I started pestering him for the pump. I didn't have a place outside for it just yet but I did have a very cool new bride who let me turn our family room into a car 50's room. Dad sold me the pump for what he paid for it. It was then polished up and brought right into my family room. The way you see it in the pics is the way we bought it, nice and clean. After my wife and I sold our first home the pump was relocated to the family room of our second house.

In May of this year we were able to buy what for my wife and I is our dream home. We looked long and hard to find just the right location and the perfect house for us to spend the rest of our lives in. She has always understood my thing with cars and hot rods. When we decided to move it was for a better town with a much better school system for our 5 and 7 year old girls. But it also had to have room in the yard for me to be able to have the shop in the back yard I have always dreamed of. There was even a couple houses that seemed like the might be perfect, but when we showed up to walk through them with our realtor the yard wasn't able to have the back yard garage. The first words out of my wifes mouth on both of those occasions was that this house will not due. If we can't build the garage then there is no sense in even going in the house to look at it. She is AWESOME!!!!!!!.

As some of you have followed along you have seen the build of the garage. This weekend I poured the pad in front of the garage to mount the gas pump onto. Today my dad came over and we bolted the pump down. I am running an extension cord for now as I will not have any electricity in the garage until spring. There is a timer on it so that it lights up when it gets dark and then shuts off around midnight.

This may seem a little stupid, but I was so excited to finally after 14 years get this pump mounted outside my back yard workshop.

I know this was a long post and I do apologize, but I am just so happy.:bounce:

Absolutely beautiful! I can't wait to see how you finish the inside.
You need something over the top of the door to balance it out, something the width of the door and a foot or so high. I'm sure you can find something really cool and period! Just the never ending interior design training coming out :p .

Maybe a sign in vintage style reading "Copper Hill Rod & Custom" is what Annette is thinking about... ;-)

Looking really good, and nice story to go with it...reminds me a lot of my own wife.

You are right on track with the sign. Copper Hill is the name of my street. I do alot of hot rod type work so thats what we named the garage.
It is not an official business, just a hobby shop with some side work going on inside.

Excellent suggestion! Now that I take another look, whatever you do might look better if it were over the door and gas pump. I'm sure since you have kids, you have construction paper in the house. Try taping a few pieces together in the different sizes (door width only or door and pump width) and scotch tape them above the door and stand back and see which suits the space better.
When I was designing my kitchen, I made "knobs" out of construction paper in all sizes and would tape them on the door at different heights and leave them for a few days to see which way worked better. Apparently my fake hardware was pretty good because my husband kept trying to open the cabinets with them :bounce: .

My plan is to have the sign go over the door and pump. I think it will look good. Since they are both the same hieght I think it would look better than just over the door. I do like the idea of using construction paper.

Thanks Glenn
