Mandatory location

Is there anyway to have a mandatory location on signup? I know that a lot of people would lie, but there are so many questions that cannot be answered without know a general location. Warm climate foundations and footers of a garage is 180 degrees different from a cold location foundation and footer. It would sure make it a lot easier to answer specific questions. Ones signing up don't have to pinpoint to the exact block that they live on, but at least a state or climate zone would really help.

You have to remember that some cities are fairly small. What if I were to post some outside pics of my garage or obvious outside land marks? What if I had also posted somewhere on here about the $150 000 in SO tools, multiple high value vehicles and all the fancy toys I own? What if I live in a city with 100 000 people? What if someone is industrious enough to drive around said city looking for said garage/landmarks?

It wouldn't even need to be on this site. If you use your username for more than one website (forums or whatever) a simple google search will find all those entries and if you've added a city location to any one of those sites, everyone knows where your highly desirable thief-magnets are. People really need to remember this!

On a serious note, I think there was already a similar incident involving a member of this board. I don't have time to search threads right now, but I will try and dig it up later. If anyone remembers what I'm talking about, please post. The bunker shop maybe?

i believe it was "the bunker" thread in utah..........somebody was asking too many detailed questions and i agree about posting where you live, should be a choice.............same with your first name..........i'll sign it in pm but would prefer if it wasn't broadcast on the net.........if someone needs to know, pm and i'll gladly tell what you need to satisfy your curiosity............

I agree with the above points. There's also the consideration that once something is said online, it almost never goes away.

It's prudent to avoid sharing too many personal details, and not paranoia.

Your location is good. I posted roughly this same topic not too long ago. Sometimes people ask for help & without knowing where they are it does no good.

A good example would be if I didn't have mine listed & I asked where is a cheap place to buy something. What if several members listed K Mart or Checker/Shucks/Kragen auto parts. None of those exist in my area so IMHO I would be wasting everyone that responds time.

That's fine if you only want someone to know if they PM you, but a lot of people post questions like "should I build my garage out of 2x6's or 2x4's" or "should I insulate or not". Well if you are in Georgia, Florida, or a southern state like that, it's a heck of a lot of difference than Michigan, Vermont, or Maine. Just a state location can make a huge difference in an answer and one shouldn't have to PM another member to get that info. If a member doesn't want to post the state they live in because they are paranoid that someone is going to get them, then I really imagine when the government put you in the "Witness protection program", they really didn't expect the person to sit and post on the 'net all day long. I can see reasons like with the Bunker thread, but Utah is fairly big and nothing had to be pinpointed down. It's just that it would save a lot of time on answers if a member could give a general location within a 200 mile radius.

To be honest the "mt" in your name is not obvious to your location. Since everyone does not start their screen name with their states abbreviation like you have does not mean they knew what you were meaning. If I could decode everyone's screen name & decode it like you make to be easy, then, I'd be a genius.

As I said, I wasn't trying to hide anything. Someone traveling this far to break into my shop is the least of my worries.

& when I'm not (if a person could figure that out) I have 3 neighbors who are also garage freaks who also aren't afraid of protecting their or my property - the same way I would do for them....one is even an assistant district attorney & police react to his calls lots quicker than to most - in force!

Nothing's perfect....alarm systems don't stop every robbery; the shrewd criminal can find ways around them....& most alarm companies don't respond anywhere hear as quickly as on TV ads! Heck, with some of them, you might as well just buy their sign & place it outside your house for all the good they do! The shrewd burglar would intentionally set one off, wait to see how long it takes the polce to arrive & come back later with their timetable!

I think Kevin's comments sums up my line of thinking too. At least indicate the State (or Province) you live in (not "State of Insanity or Poverty", either)
