With all the the brands being made overseas in countries such as china and Taiwan. do you think there are only a few factories producing hand tools for all the brands being made over overseas or does each have there on factory ?

I can pretty much guarantee that one factory produces multiple lines of products. I've been in the manufacturing game for awhile now, and every factory I have worked in produced multiple brand names in the same plant. It will be the same overseas I would think

I would like to know more about Taiwan.
Are Gearwrench and HF made in the same plant with the same steel ingredients ?

You'll see some tools that are obviously made by a few OEMs. Rotar appears to be a big one. Then there are smaller companies that most of us never know about that make tools sold under many brands.

William Tools is just one example:

Hi Five is another big OEM. They're one of the few ratcheting wrench OEMs.

I'm sure that one manufacturer makes multiple barands. Take Kabo for example. They've made ratcheting wrenches for SK, Cornwell, Matco, and EZ Red to name a few.

Besides, Taiwan isn't that large. Think of all of the different tool brands that come from Taiwan (Genius, Gearwrench, Sunex, Titan, Grey Pneumatic, King Tony, etc.) plus house brands like, Kobalt, Allen, Gearhead, Blue point, Expert, and others. There's no way each brand has it's own factory, just too many.

Most manufacturing of steel products require one or more of the following operations : stamping, forging, broaching, welding, grinding, heat treating and polishing (I'm sure I missed some here).

Certain operations require "tooling" which is typically owned by the "brand" company. This allows them to change manufacturing facilities relatively quickly. Designs may change when manufacturers change (Craftsman lobster claw wrenches), but typically they are to improve the product or reduce the cost.

This Old Fart up in the stix of Northern Minnesota believes many of the tool manufacturers in China and Taiwan are contracted to manufacture tools for various USA based companies.....;; an easy way out of property taxes, superfund cleanups, retirement benefits, etc...

I would bet there are multiple factories in China. They need a lot of competition to keep the prices down and quality just good enough to work at least 2 times before breaking.

I have no doubt that quite a few brand names are made under the same roof. Looking around, I have seen plenty of cheaper brands that all sell identical tools. I'm sure some have their own facilities (Snap-On, Apex, etc.)

I have also seen a lot of similarities between imported toolboxes. Either they all get their hardware from the same supplier, or they are made by the same OEM.

I used to see the same thing with textile garment manufacturing. Cut and sew plants for example would turn out clothing for everybody from Wal Mart to Abercrombie, to you name it. Everything the same, except the tag and how much you the consumer pay.
