What kind of set up are you guys using for mapp gas? I have a simple propane torch at present but would like to upgrade

MAPP hasn't been made in years. My MAPP torch is a Rothenberger.

I'm partial to just about any torch that has a handle on a hose. Swirl works best when you want a lot of softer heat for things like soft soldering pipes, but the noise can get annoying.

Seems that the rep at Airgas told me once that propylene basically replaced the MAPP gas.
They sell propylene and acetylene.

Are you planning to use your upgraded torch for cutting, welding, or general heating?

Correct, although many people still have MAPP gas around, because cylinders lasted a log time, it is not produced any more. What to get now depends on what you want to do.

That explains why I hadn't seen it around. I was looking recently for a small mapp torch to alumiweld a small project. Propane takes way too long to get the aluminum hot enough.

I don't suppose I could just pick up a propylene torch kit at the hardware store for ~$25 like I used to with mapp gas.

Just last month bought a MAPP gas kit at Lowes in Columbia, SC. They seemed to have plenty on hand. The torch works with propane as well so if MAPP goes away at least the expensive part is still useful. MAPP is great stuff, haven't tried but I suspect it can be used for brazing which is incredibly handy.

I bet you'll find you got MAP/Pro gas instead of MAPP gas. MAPP gas has not been available since 2008.

Here's my MAP gas torch upgrade...

MAP is great when needed. I don't even remember what propane was like.

I am spoiled & like a self igniting torch. Frequently its under a house & on & off several times. It is just plain convenient to not need a sparker. I've been using one of these for awhile.

It replaced a self igniting torch that had a swivel nozzle that was prone to break its ignitor if dropped. Or tipped over. I broke the first one, then had 2 others done in by helpers. Similar to the TurboTorch below, with a different looking ignitor area. Maybe that version is more durable than mine were. Those cost more & did not seem the be as durable as the Bernzo I'm using now. Although I am careful to not bang it around. I rarely miss the swivel & have not had one of the newer Bernzo units fail to date.

The same Bernzomatic is available under a few different names. I have one and it has worked fine for me as a hobbyist.

They're using the . . . . ."MAP/Pro" . . . lingo to entice you into thinking it's MAPP gas.

Sadly . . . . it is NOT. No such thing as MAPP gas now.

+1 to get self-lighting torch as noted above.

I really like the 'Quickfire' gun style torch with the little bottles, but they don't make those anymore. So I got the TS800 self igniter. They both are better and worse at positioning for different jobs.

Have nothing useful to contribute. I also didn't know the difference between MAPP & Map/Pro until today.
