Does this exist? I have been using marine grade shrink tubes from harbor freight and they work great. Is there a marine grade shrink tape that offers the same results as the tubes? Everyone bashes HF but the marine grade electrical shrink tubes are the best at a good price point. It truly is a perfect product from HF. I would love to find a tape version that offers the same results.

A good while back I repaired a power cord with rubber self-fusing tape and electrical tape covering it like mrborohachi described. Being as my cord was cut half in two I was able to add real shrink wrap "caps" over the electrical tape ends. It's been weather-tight for a couple of years.

But I sure wish there was a true shrink wrap tape product like you're looking for too!

3M 2228 is about the best moisture sealing tape I've come across. The recommendation I think is to stretch it until it's 3/4 its normal width. Applied correctly, it's pretty damn good. Temflex is commonly used, but the 2228 is better.

The reason you wrap it in vinyl tape after is the the silicone tapes aren't UV resistant and will break down in sunlight. I also like to use a layer of regular vinyl tape over it to keep the end under tension until it fully fuses.

Edit: I read 3M's data sheet after posting and evidently they say it's UV resistance is adequate. In my experience though, it is very, very easy to cut, so a good vinyl tape or Tesa tape over it for abrasion resistance is a good idea.

We used to seal our antenna leads with rubber tape, covered by electrical tape, and painted with "Marine Shellac"...

No moisture ever got in, that I know of...

Three layers of rubber tape, three layers of electrical tape, and three coats of shellac...

Water proof, me thinks...

A layer or two of shrink tubing before the rubber tape wouldn't have hurt...

I don't think a tape version of marine grade shrink tubes exists. Too bad. In my head it would work great and bond to itself. Maybe it doesn't bond to itself that would explain why it doesn't exist. Many times I could use a product just like what I envision in my head. Some chemical engineer should be tasked to create some. I would buy some and I think many others would too.
