ok, two things:

1) i looked it up on amazon. this is the first listing:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009JKGJW/?tag=atomicindus08-20

3.88$ for a 32oz bottle. (add on item, list price 6.99$).

8.28$ for a 16 oz bottle.

ok, the bottle that is twice as big is less than 1/2 the cost?

anyway, that appears to be fuel/oil additive. i remember these little 3.N ounce cans of the "red oil" that didnt mention that. honestly, i dont need 16oz's, let alone 32. the local guy only has those big 16oz bottles. he remembers the smaller ones, but doesn't remember the last time he saw one, and "the computer" doesn't list anything to order.

so, is it a false memory? marvel's web site doesn't mention it, just this stuff and some air tool oil. i seem to remember being instructed to use "the smallest drop you can manage" when the joints of tools started to get stuff, and working the joint a few times to get it all worked in.

maybe it is just me . . . .

Its great stuff. We used to put a little in the airplane's tanks when we ran auto gas, now we have access to 100LL so I dont use it too often. Its also great for freeing up stuck engines.

Marvel mystery oil is used as a fuel additive.i use it in my old hit and miss engines mixed with gas and Coleman lantern fuel.its the original type.i bought one of the small bottles a while back but recently could only find the larger size like you. According to their website you can only buy the small bottles in their air tool oil unless you find someone that still has some of the original still on the shelf.but if you look at their website you'll see that the original stuff is what is what is now in the larger bottles.

I still have a quart can of Marvel oil from what like seems forever. :D

As far I remember it has always said that...Add to gas to and oil as lubricant. 4 oz to 10 gal gas. I used to add a few oz in the gas for my 1976 Shovelhead Harley back in those early days.

1 quart to 100 gal diesel. Keeps fuel pumps and carburators clean. Lubricates pistons rings and valves. One quart added to the crankcase oil (do not overfill).

As far as our notes go the 4oz bottle was discontinued.

i'm sorry, yes, i wanted a small can, like the one dfb shows. that is like what i remember, although from the context, his sees larger. anyway, it might have said "add to gas and oil" on the can, but the container was sized for lubrication of moving parts, not squirting it in fuel or oil, it seemed like the can was way to small for that, i would have run out too quickly.

ah, well, i suppose i am wrong. . . ..

I don't see what the big deal is, when a quart is 3 dollars and change at Walmart.

Just buy the quart and pour it in a smaller dispenser. You'll use it all.

Is the confusion about the oil being the same? If so it is the same oil, they are just marketing it differently and the small cans were not worth the effort for them to produce. I bet you can find a small can on ebay and refill it.

Maybe the old stuff was different, I have seen the labeling on the small cans and it says lubricating oil instead of mystery oil. I had always used the bigger can and just refilled the smaller container, of course I can't seem to find my smaller container now.

i was not sure if what i was looking for is what they were currently selling. i dont want to use something on my tools that won't perform as i expect it to.

i would not expect oil/fuel treatment to be a great lubricant anymore than i would expect powered sugar and talcum powder to be interchangeable for mixing into cookie ingredients.

it does seem, however, in this instance i must be wrong. there is a picture of the can i remember right there, after all.

Is the mystery air tool oil the same as you buy in the larger containers? I like the air tool oil and if it's the same I can just refill with my bigger bottle

Marvel Mystery oil is sold in many sizes at auto parts stores, Walmart, hell I think I've seen it in stop n shop. I've used it in motor oil, transmissions, mixed in gasoline, ratchets, electric hair clippers, cylinder heads, mc/atv chain and sprocket and anything else that needs some lube. Check out their website http://www.marvelmysteryoil.com

I'm curious to hear. Was this as an oil additive, or as a gas additive?

I use it in gas in my small engines, to prevent sticking valves (a known issue with Honda engines and ethanol), where an ounce of prevention saves a pound of cure.

MMO BTW also makes an air tool oil that I use in my air tools. It is supposedly just MMO with more corrosion inhibiting properties. Works well enough for me.

it's the same oil, just marketed differently.

it's basically 80% light mineral oil and the rest is mineral spirits. there is a trace bit of dichlorobenzene (<1%) which is another solvent and what the guys who use it in the oil thinks helps the ZDDP, and what the guys that put it in the gas thinks help clean valves and fuel system.

then red dye and oil of wintergreen to make it smell good when you use it in air tools!

FWIW, seafoam is nearly identical minus the dye and wintergreen...

As the original mans post was asking the lubricating oil that was sold years ago in the small 4 once bottle is the exact same oil as sold today in the larger bottles labeled add to fuel or fuel additive.i have a small one left but you cant buy them anymore.you can verify them as the same at the marvel mystery oil website.the air tool oil is a different product.

a52-830 - I ran into the same thing. I finally used up the last of my tiny 4-ounce bottle and then could only find it in quarts here.
I'll find a tiny plastic squeeze bottle I can dispense drops with at some drug store - Walgreen's or RiteAid will have something that will serve the purpose.

The SDS reads exactly the same chemical mixture for both the Mystery oil and the air tool but on their FAQ page they say a corrosion inhibitor has been added to the tool oil

"The formulation of the Air Tool Oil is nearly identical to the original MMO but also includes a heavy-duty corrosion inhibitor to protect the tool in the high-moisture environment of air tools."

This is what I use. I've got a 4 oz bottle; use it a few drops at a a time, and it lasts for years. is red like ATF.

I think the original MMO product has been around since the 30's, in the days when some mechanics recommended using an "upper cylinder lubricant".

Burt Pierce founded the Marvel Oil Company in 1923. His reputation for ingenuity preceded him as he was already well-known for inventing the Marvel Carburetor, standard equipment on 80% of all vehicles produced after World War I.

Vehicles of the post WWI era encountered carburetor problems, the most perplexing being clogged jets due to high lead content and other contaminants found in the gasoline of the time. The problem motivated Mr. Pierce to direct his creative ingenuity towards formulating a blend of chemicals and petroleum products to clean and maintain clogged jets. He was successful beyond his wildest expectations and the legend was born!

“Mystery Oil”, as it was originally called, proved to have other beneficial effects on the engine. By creating a top ring seal, it produced higher compression and, by preventing blow-by on power strokes, it resulted in more power. Mystery Oil also improved gas mileage and minimized engine wear.

Nope.. that little tiny black plastic bottle has a cap on it that won't come off.
I tried - had a pair of Vise-Grips on it - wouldn't budge.
I use it to lubricate the control cables on lawnmowers (and other stuff.) one or two drops - pretty much same needs as the OP.
Not a big deal. I paid WAY too much for the quart - about 9 bucks at a local parts store - but that little 4 ounce bottle was about $4 - so just as well.

As for small dispenser bottles I get them at the hobby/craft store. They are in the art department where the wimmin get the color and sparkles for painting clothes and stuff. Some times in the adhesives department.
