Mastercraft Screwdrivers partial timeline

Thought I would share my mastercraft (canadiantire) unintentional collection.

Ill start from the bottom up.

Black handle - 70th 1992 anniversary

marked "canada" and "reg. 1977" on the handle. "Torque- Master" on the blade.

Handle after this many years of use still looks brand spanking new. The blade although looks oxidized, really is very minor. The business end looks to be free of pitting or rust.

I heard in a thread a while ago these might of been made by Gray?

Second from the bottom is probably about 7-8 years old. Dad got the whole set and it has been nothing but great, havent broken any yet after lots of use.

Second from the top looks very similar to the one below it (currently selling these)... i bought them because they were on sale and the ones my dad bought (that looked similar) have been great. Let me tell you what though... these screw drivers are the absolute shittiest pieces of **** that dont even deserve to have my **** on. Me and a friend both picked up sets i picked up the 95 piece and he the 75 piece, between the two of us within the first 3 days of using them broke (completely snapped off the head) on probably close to 13 screw drivers most of which in dinky chrome piece holding screws. They may look similar to the older ones but i would advise anyone to NOT buy them. As you can see it looks the most worn but has been used the least out of all of them. Definition of ****.

The top screw driver is the current mastercraft maximum set they are selling i got this in exchange when i returned my 95 piece without a receipt (good customer service). These are so far so good, but haven't seen extensive use.

Anyone have older then 1992 mastercraft screw drivers? Would love to see them.

Do they make good prybars?

It is always sad to see a brand decline, even a fairly minor player.

I have 2 black ones they look old. Ones a flat blade and other is a stubby Philips. I use the stubby for anything my makita impact gun cant get to. See's lots of use you could say. I will bring them home tomorrow and get pics. Maybe i can find more.
I was just wondering the other day who makes them since they say Canada on them.

mastercraft doesnt do anything good, but they do everything for about 10cents to a buck a piece.

cant beat it when you need ****, and theres a canadian tire in every town, so you can always go and grab that socket in the middle of a job.

i have never seen anything that old even, thats awesome.

Here are some older ones.They started out with a smaller square handle.I think they were made by Will but I could be wrong.They were the same as Gray,should be a Gray in the pic,but I think Will made them for both Mastercraft and Gray.I may be wrong,LbGradwell should be able to correct me if I am.

Well funny that you mention it, heres one that was used to ram on a alternator belt This is from the set my dad bought back 7-8 years ago

At least it bent instead of break off!

Mastercraft is certainly not a minor player in canada.

No Mastercraft is a huge player in the Canadian tool scene.Probably more Mastercraft tools sold in Canada than any other brand I would bet.Canadian Tire for volume of tools sold would compare with Sears for you US guys.I'd say they blow Sears Canada out of the water for tool sales.I don't think I've ever been to a Canadian Tire that wasn't fully stocked with pretty much the whole line of tools.

The black handled driver was made by Will, I think - it was discussed in another thread (I'd never heard of them before that.

I've got the set like the black-handled one, roughly from the early to mid-'90's. There was also a larger rubberized handle screwdriver they offered at about that time - I think these moved into the Maximum line, and evolved into the Maximum driver you've pictured. Those were actually very good, my Dad has a set which I'll try to get a picture of in a day or two.

The current mastercraft maximum line is made in china. Says the box atleast.

The oldest ones I have (that I can find right now) are handled in a transparent yellow plastic and stamped cTc. The catalogs show CTC selling wooden handled drivers well into the mid sixties....I'll have a closer look tomorrow.

You are right they are made by will.

Here's a shot of some Mastercraft rubber handled screwdrivers, circa early to mid '90's. Not sure where they were made, or who supplied them.
