Mastercraft Tool Chest going on sale

Hey guys (specifically Canadians)

The Mastercraft Maximum 47" tool chest goes on sale Friday for $499. The top will be $450.

Anyone own this? Wondering about quality. Don't love the blue handles but it's a good deal for this area for sure.

Tempted to pick this up. Its gotta be better that the HF 44" and I don't live anywhere where I can get one of those.

Anyone know who makes these? I know they had a couple Montezuma boxes for a while, but I don't think these fit the bill.

I was actually in canadian tire 2 days ago looking at this, the colour isn't that bad when you see it in person.

Opinion on quality? They just seem a little weak but I've nothing to compare them to. The retail price at $1100 is just stupid.

I can't say I've seen this box but any time I'm in CT I check em out and find their boxes to be very flimsy. Thin metal on the drawers with no folds in the side panels that add strength. Princess auto has General which aren't bad. If I was in the market I'd email Harbor Freight and see what shipping would cost. They've got great reviews here and would cost about the same delivered on a sale.

Shipping to the border is about $260. Add duty and it gets a little steeper. Going to end up costing a pretty penny considering I'm several hours from any border.

Might just **** it up, save the pennies and go all Steevo on my cabinets. . . Bring back a mess of Harbor fright. Nearest one is a 10 hour drive.

No time like the present to make my first post...

I have the Mastercraft Maximum 26" bottom cabinet in Stainless Steel and the thing is beautiful - drawer slides are rock solid with a easy feeling to them, and overall construction hasn't been an issue whatsoever. I like your thinking, got it at 50% off (never pay retail at Can Tire) and am completely satisfied. Actually, anything Mastercraft Maximum that I own have all been good products.

Another route to go possibly for you though is checking with Costco on the Homak 41 chest combo with the side locker for about $700. I also have this and again, no issues with it at all. the layout of the box could be slightly better, but for this price point, it's not something i regret buying.

Just my two cents - I think you'll like that Mastercraft box you're looking at.

Just for info, i've been in a Harbor Freight to look at their boxes and in my opinion the Mastercraft Maximum is a nicer product.

Every time I'm in canadian tire I go and check out the boxes. They're alright but I think its alot of money for what you get and better deals could be had. They are pretty flimsy when you lean on the drawers and shake them. I live in calgary and we have a place in whitefish mt. I've brought back so much stuff over the years, hardly shop online in canada anymore. Anyway the border in rooseville bc is really good. You get 800 duty free for 48 hrs and I've gotten through with more. Could make a weekend out of it; Missoula has a hf and theyre about 90mi from whitefish which is 4.5 hrs from calgary.

I'm in Wetaskiwin. Still a 9 hour drive but if I staged out of Calgary. .

My plan is 2 HF 44" boxes, 2 HF end cabinets and the red 700lb service cart. Service cart for portability and the rest permanent ala Steevo.

Or hope to get good deals locally but those HF prices are hard to beat.

Don't know. HF still my best option for storage/dollar even with a long drive.

I have the 26" wide top, intermediate and bottom Mastercraft tool chests. I know these aren't the best quality but for my use (weekend mechanic) it was perfect. I say was because of course, they're now full.

I've looked at the Mastercraft Maximum Euro-style chests and found that they would fit perfectly in my space (47"). I like their look (not essential but a big plus). I'm also pretty loyal to Canadian Tire. So, I have decided to purchase them the next time they become on special. Unfortunately, for some reason, the top no longer appears on their website or app.

The obvious guess would be that they are or being discontinued. Can anybody confirm this?

I haven't found any other easily accessible canadian supplier in this size. I found 41" and 42".

I know that my local CT has a combo as demonstrators. If they are discontinued, I might be able to get them at a really good price but I'm waiting for the special to maximize my savings.

Any input would be appreciated and I'll try to get more info on my side.

I've had the bottom for over a year.

The top of it is really flimsy. Unless you make a wood top for it, don't even consider using it as a work surface. Anything over 10 lbs, set down very carefully.

The drawer slides are typical Mastercraft. They always seem to bind in the last few inches. If you pull the drawer open all the way it will need to be pushed in harder for the latches to catch. Every box at Canadian Tire seems to have this problem. Not sure if it's hardened grease or what.

The problem with all the "Euro" style boxes is the rounded corners. It's looks over function. Want a wood top? You'll need to cut rounded corners. Want a different style/brand top box? I won't fit to the edges. Want a side locker or other accessory? Measure first because they might not fit either.

All in all, not bad for a cheap box. Mine doesn't get moved around a lot, but after a year of daily professional use it's still in the same shape as when I got it.

They seem better then the regular Canadian Tire boxes, at least to me. Tempting but I don't like the drawer layout.

As for the regular Canadian Tire box line, they are the same generic made in China as many brands. The box I liked they got rid of, but I used it well for a number of years.

The slides started to go though over time, especially the drawers I had heavier things in (set up fixturing for lathe/mill, etc).

Tempted to go Snap-On, Kennedy or Rousseau for the better slides in them though.

The top box for the 47" set has been redesigned. Now taller, with a much more squared-off till. The drawer arrangement is the same, colour scheme, everything else is the same. The bottom rollcab is unchanged.

I'm more than a little disappointed. I liked the previous style chest, rounded artsy "Euro design" and all.

Sadly, at Canadian Tire, none of the toolbox is Canadian made. Some of their Chinese made boxes are nice looking, but they are flimsy.


SPG is a Canadian company, and several of their boxes are made in Canada. Even Sears Canada still sell some models. There is a "Made in Canada" sticker on the side of the toolbox.

The Stanly branded combo box at Costco.ca is made by SPG in Canada, the Lower box is identical to SPG VRB-4211.
