I am heavily considering these two boxes to replace my home tool box. I am a little dissapointed in the depth of the top drawer on both boxes. I looked at Sears and the Craftsman boxes are deeper, but only have one set of drawer slides and are much more $$. Ive kept an eye on CL, but the MAC/Snap On boxes listed there are holding close to what you would pay for them new. Im really just looking for a bottom box with a top drawer thats deep enough to hold the 1/2"Hansen racks sitting front to back.

This may not interest you if you only want the bottom box, but the bottom of the 41" Masterforce top box has a pull-out work surface.

One thing to note is that the HF is not actually 3" wider. They are really both 42" boxes. Harbor Freight exaggerates a bit :shocking:

The drawer sizes are virtually the same. The HF narrower but slightly deeper - 22.125x16.0 vs. 23x15.75

I have the old style Masterforce box, 41" and if I had to get a new box noe I would get the 46" version. The reason is two set's of 24" wide drrawers instead od a 24" & 16" set.

The drawer depth on the new Masterforce boxes is 15-1/2 " deep inside. They shrunk 3/4" to add the drawer latch feature which works better then the old style detent.

I'd like to bring this back to life...
I'm replacing a homebox, like the OP.

And I was set on the HF 44"...until my brother brought up how much he liked his masterforce 56". And how much he liked it.

I will be sure to replace the HF castors if I got that one.

I've really been liking my masterforce box that I picked up a little over a month ago. I was in the same debate between it and the hf 44" and I'm glad I made the decision that I did. The casters are pretty nice on the master force box, plus you get the latching drawers and a choice of colors. The only downside is it does cost a little more even on sale and I believe the hf box has two more drawers. I put a cheap work bench top on mine and mounted a small vise to it and made a nice little work station.

I can't say anything about the Masterforce as I've never used one.

The HF roller I have does it's job well though. The drawers open smoothly and stay closed. I've only moved it twice: Once into my garage and once into the place I work at. I really can't think of any complaints. I have a decent amount of weight in it and the drawers don't seem to mind too much. From what I've heard the Masterforce is just as solid. I think the deciding factor is going to be whichever one has the drawer setup you prefer.

I'm leaning towards the HF on that.

I just looked at the Masterforce again and the drawer layout would push me away from it. Personally I benefit more from the higher number of shallow drawers with the HF 44" than I would with the deeper drawers of the Masterforce.

Do those 72" Masterforces ever show up used at a decent price? The depth is decent on them and the drawer layout looks pretty nice.

I think hf includes the handle in there measurements its really misleading

I believe so.

I agree with more drawers vs a few deep ones. I could organize it better. And there's plenty of deep drawers for pneumatic tools & sockets, etc.

I looked at the layouts on the Masterforce boxes before I decided on the 56" boxes. I printed out the pictures of the different sizes to help.

The 72" box has come down in price to $1499. I thought I saw it down to $1299 one time. It was $1999 which at the price I think I would look at Montezuma or Extreme boxes.

If it makes any difference, Masterforce boxes are made by the same company that manufactures Montezuma
