Matco 1/4" Thumb Driver

While digging through tools at the flea market yesterday for some replacement sockets & screwdrivers I came across a Matco ARS1 WF - a 1/4" thumb driver. Of course I picked it up, brought it home and started to clean it up. The chrome is in great shape but the ball lock is rusted. I soaked it in PB50 & got the ball to break free, but it is so rusted it doesn't spring back up & hold a socket on it. As a DIY'er I was just looking to round out my tool collection but not go on a warranty exchange run. Is there way to clean up the ball-retainer?

You might try soaking it in some transmission fluid or kerosene.

You are probably going to have to face the fact that the item is ready for warranty, I have had poor luck trying to get those tiny little springs in the detent ball to come back once theyre junk.

Just fill out the form on matco's website, mail it in and get another one. You should be able to mail that for like $2, and the return shipping will be free. They may even give prepaid mailing labels but I'm not sure. I'm guessing they've got a new version of the tool by now.

Don't give up. I had a Thorsen breaker bar with the same problem. I just let it sit in kroil for three weeks and it's as good as new.
