Matco 4s vs classic 78

I have a classic 78 box in good condition, but i don't like the color. I have a chance to pickup a nice used matco 4s with stainless steel top for $1700. Is that a good deal? Is the matco a nicer box. THe classic 78 boxes are going on craigslist around here for between 2000-3000.

It depends on the local market. I've spent most of the past couple years looking for the right box & read a lot of threads on them. Seen people post that they got ridiculous deals & that prices I would have loved to pay were too high. I'd say it's a great deal if you can get that for the 78. Around here they're both about the same price (1200-2000 depending on condition). I'm not a fan of the drawer layout or divider in the top drawer but the 4s is a very solid box.

I personally think Matco makes a better box unless you're going Epiq, but I would stick with the Classic 78 if it was me. The drawer lay out on the 4s series *****

Which is probably better built? The drawer layout don't bother me. The one thing I hate about my snap on is the slide lock. No one can ever figure out how to open it when they try to use it.

I have a 4s built back around Y2K, that I bought new off the truck. Since then I think they have come out with a couple of different versions of it (2 bay vs 3 bay etc)
Also they also have since come out with a 5s and a 6s, which I took to be heavier built than the 4s. I had a chance to get a twin to my 4s for a steal like a year ago
I snozed and I lost that chance. Been kicking myself since as I need one that size for home, I have my current 4s at work.

I have a 3 bay 4S and am very happy with it. The divided top drawer actually is pretty handy I used to keep my time cards and other non tool things in the front section of the drawer for easy access.

Hands down the 4s or Pro-formance is a better built box than the Snap-On classic series.

I have owned a 2 bay Pro-formance and did not have any issues with it. Quality slides, acceptable casters, solid handle and nice looking powdercoating.

I have since traded it for an Epiq but remember that box with fondness, the Epiq is better in every aspect but that is not a fair comparison at all.

I agree, 4s is the way to go UNLESS its the 4222 which is only 22" deep. I have had my 4325 top and bottom for 5 years and had a 2 bay Matco for 9 years before it. That's before they came out with 4,5,&6 series versions. Always used Matco boxes and my dad used them LONG before I was in the field.

Slc97 is right though, epiq and 4s Matco boxes is like comparing honda to Mercedes.

Sold the snap on and got the matco. I am very happy with the matco. I love the detents better, and it rolls a lot better with tools in it then the snap on. It also feels heavier and better built.
