anyone with experience with the Matco 4s line of boxes? Im finding them all over for cheap. Is it better than the harbor freight 56 inch? I know its not KRL quality territory but the pockets don't go down deep enough for one of those right now.

I have one in my garage. It's a very well built and quality professional box IMO. I wouldn't even consider a Harbor Freight/Craftsman/Kobalt box to be anywhere in the same league.

They tend to flood the market at times, especially near community colleges, as Matco provides a very generous discount on that box too Tech-Ed students. They're well worth the price, IMO, when picked up at a discount.

That being said, they have an unusual drawer configuration which may suit you or be a bit annoying with your layout preferences.

Thats good to hear. Is it difficult to find top boxes for them or can you throw anything up there?

Top boxes have been made as long as the bottom box has. The 4s started life as the performance series and has been made for close to 15 years. Personally I think the first top box is a stupid design, three large full width drawers. I like the newer tops better, but I'm think a top will be hard to find seprate. More and more guys buy hutches nowadays. Large flat surface you can put anything you want on top.

I know a bunch of people who had the 4s and proformance series of those toolboxes and they all had a hutch, probably the way the student deal went.

I picked up a 4s over the winter, a triple bay with a hutch. I consider it is an upgrade over my previous box, a KRA series Snap On. Overall I think they are a great bang for the buck and it certainly fit all of my needs.

I have a 4s doublebay at work. No top. I love it. It is most certainly high quality. I prefer it over the KRL, but mostly because of the drawer configuration. I like having two of the same size, rather than one big and one small. Matco also sells a full length intermediate box with one drawer, so you could have 2 full length on top if you wanted to spend the money.
Thinking about it, I see more people with matco boxes at my job, probably because they're easier to find cheaper than a snap-on, yet with the same quality.

I have a 2-bay ProFormance which is the same as the 4S, just a predecessor model name. Heavy, smooth drawer slides, great finish -- it's actually nicer than the Snap On KRA Classic 96 I have also. The 4S series is one of the great buys in the pre-owned market, IMO.

I also have a double bay 4s and I love it. I just traded it in on a new 4s triple bay with hutch and a locker.( going to be waiting awhile since matco is about 2 months behind so ive been told) For the price they cant be beat in my opinion. they are built extremly well. much better then and other guys in the shop that have a Mac Tech series and a Snap on classic series.

I have a 4s and a few kra's boxes. In my opinion the drawers and slides are way better on the 4s boxes.

Out of curiosity, do you know how much they ask for that? For the 4S Double Bay 25" 4225R-BC. I've never met an actual Matco dealer or seen their catalogue, and they don't have that stuff online.

Its ludicrously expensive. $1200 rings a bell. If you are seriously interested, I can talk to my matco dealer tuesday.

Does the bottom of the drawer flex in and out as you press on it like the hood of a car? That's what the drawers in my KRL do.

I ordered my 4S back in January. I left the factory within 4 weeks (2/29 to be exact) and took about 2 days to be delivered. Maybe since then they got seriously behind. Just relaying my experience. My Matco guy lives 4 houses away, I'll ask him next time I see him.

Yikes, while that's likely around what I'd imagine it'd be... I think I was just priced out of serious interest, sigh. If you can, it'd be cool to see a picture of your 4S with it though!

JUST picked one up and its better than my entry level KRA Snapon 27" wide box I outgrew. I didnt want to feel like I sold out to China by buying a HF box. Nice seeing its made in Jamestown NY (been there lots for work)
