Guys - this is a poll. Which box is the better box and why? Let's assume both boxes are sporting the stainless top but the Matco does NOT have upgraded spring 6" casters...

I was having this debate with a co-worker recently and I wanted to get some thoughts / comments on what each of you thinks.

I know the Matco configurator can be used to look at the 5225 but does anyone know if Matco has there full specs online? (like weight rating of the casters, etc.) I ordered their catalog and everything shows the old 5s boxes.

IMO:

Matco 5225RX-CS Pros: (44" H x 57 1/2" W x 25" D)
Drawer layout (more thin drawers)
More square inches (31% more)
Detent Slides (Not lock 'n' roll)
Has a full length stiffener running under the top two full width drawers.
Polished Chrome Trim

SO KRL7022 Pros: (41" H x 54" W x 29" D)
Higher capacity casters
Deeper for long tools
Probably better long term add-on options and support

Snap-on is my choice, I hate those stiffeners/dividers that go across the long top drawers on Matco boxes. I also like that the snappy is deeper.

Why do you not like the stiffeners? Doesn't it make for a stronger design? Or do you think it just adds unnecessory height?

Unless this series is different then the other Matco boxes I have seen the stiffener is in the drawer and divides the front 1/4 of the drawer from the rear 3/4 or so.

I thought somebody already had a KRL7022. :D

Hence the debate - and why I would post a poll! Coworker is looking at the 5225 and I was losing the debate!

Anyone know if the the new 5s double wide drawers have the stiffeners that divide the drawers?

I have to admit, that Matco looks pretty nice!

Personally, go on the truck and mess with both boxes if you can. Rattle the S/O's long drawers back and forth and the matcos, pay attention to how flimsy the S/O feels in comparison and then bang on sheet metal. The Matco box just feels like it's better built box in comparison. I used to have the bottom of the line Matco 4725 then upgraded to a Snappy KRL1022. In comparison, for the layout the S/O is much more utilitarian in my case, however if Matco ever came out with one that had the same drawer setup without having that much less room in SQ IN storage available I'd switch in a heartbeat. I'd feel comfortable standing in one of my old matco's drawers, not the case with the S/O.

I would go with the matco, solely due to the number of drawers. As for alignment pins on a handle...if you can't put a f'ing handle on your toolbox without alignment pins, then you don't need a damn toolbox to start with.

The 6" spring casters are an option. Rated at 900lbs ea. Around $310

I forgot to add. The basic specs on the 5s & 5rx should be the same. The changes were that the support shelf was lowered. This allowed fewer small drawers & extra top drawer.

Tell your coworker to look at the 5228. It's 28 inches deep. I figured I'd give him that option so the box will be more similar in size.

I have nothing against Matco boxes. It all depends on layout and which set up works better for you. That being said I would go with Snap-on if for nothing else the resale/trade in value down the road will most likely be higher.

Thanks daveblank - I was hoping you would weigh in.

Do you know what the rating is for the 'stock' 6" non-spring casters?

Does Matco have a catalog out for the 5225rx / the newest model toolboxes?

Really? Resale on Snap-On always trumps Matco?

Well guys - thanks for all of the comments so far. I have to admit, I thought because of the love of Snap-On on the board (myself included) that this would be a run away.

BUT it is a dead heat - 4 for Matco, 4 for Snap-On right now.

Keep the comments coming...

I have a Matco box... its a great box and has held up well. The higher end Matco stuff is of course pretty beefy but for some reason I've always noticed that Snap-On KRL series stuff no matter the age always seems to still be in great shape. KRL stuff I think is just built a little nicer and frankly I've been looking at possibly going that route sometime in the future. I love the layout of that box.

That price is way high for the used snap on box. You can find these for under $2000, on ebay and craigslist. I paid $1300 for my used krl1003 with the stainless top last year off of craigslist. You may have to be paitent, but good deals on these used will only be getting better. For $3000 you can find a used krl1003, id bet you could even find a krl1003 for 2500 if your patient.

and I def. vote for snap on, the stiffeners in the top drawer ruin it for me. but both boxes drawers are very smooth.

So in other words you were getting your *** kicked in an arguement with someone who isn't as enamored with SO as this board and you need some kind of ammo to try and get back in the game?

No, that is not that case at all. I'm genuinely interested in what is the better box so I can make a recommendation for my good friend. And, along the way, I might learn something which is always a good thing.

This isn't about brand loyalty, this is about which is the better toolbox and why.

i think it's a toss up on the quality question. after the initial problems with my new matco i'm satisfied, matco stood up and built me another top box. the stiffener/divider is only in the long top drawer of the bottom box and really hasn't presented a problem for me.

the 31% more square in storage is also something to consider.

i'm thinking about using the snap on combo as my work box when i get back to work just because it's easier to move. it won't hold all my tools but it will hold the basics!

I hear that! The Matco filled with tolls must weigh over 2 or 3 TONS

Yes they do. There are also stiffiners on the bottom of the drawers also. I used mine to keep my ratchets & extensions in the front & sockets in the rear. One of these days I'll take pics of the inside of my box when the boat is out of the garage.

I voted for the SO because that is what I have ( a KRL1022) and I think it is the nicer of the two boxes. I do have to agree with chad_s that that price is high for that box. I paid $3000 for my box from a dealer which, although not as good a deal as chad got obviously, is still better than a $3000 box that is quite a bit smaller as in this case. Plus I ended up getting a $750 certificate to use for tools. Also tampascl just got a 7022 for $2000. So patience is a virtue and if your friend does as chad_s suggested, a better deal will come along.
