How much do you guys think it's worth? Matco 6s toolbox. Custom built. It's a two bay box with extra wide drawers. It's the same width as a three bay. 28 inches deep. Build June of 2013. Few scratches. Great toolbox. Got a kid on the way. Thinking of going to something else that's simpler.

The trade in value would be twice what you'd get off Craigslist for it. I imagine the tool guy would give you at least $8000 for it. Craigslist, $3500 tops.

It would make it simpler if you tell us how much you bought it for. Here's my guess:

$3200-3900 @ $250-300/drawer. This number is based on Lista triple banks

Why is trade in value significantly more than street sale? Sounds kinda backward, doesn't it? I heard about this also for SO brand.

Because they take it off list price. I got $3800 trade in on a cman side by side stack lol. He sold me a 13k box for 5500. He sold my old box to someone in the shop for 600

Toolguys can move boxes much easier than your Craigslist seller. These days not a lot of people have $5k cash to spare. But credit that's no problem

The dealers can sell them for more and provide financing for buyers. I believe they have some room on the new box they are selling also. I see boxes like that priced around 5k in my area but I don't know if that is what they get. I sold a larger two bay Matco box of mine 5 years and I got about .50 on the dollar compared to what I paid. They are hard to sell and by the time you are done purchasing something else there may not be much money left over. It's a great looking box by the way.

LOL @ the cman box...

oh man reading your numbers makes my head hurts - it's so backward... what in the world - the weird pricing structure!!!!

I think you said the key word, "credit" ... geez, what a tough world for the wrench turners.

This whole thing reminds me of a meme of a mansion owner w/ an old buick and a house-trailer owner with a new AMG benz.

I think you would be lucky if you sell it to someone for $4.5K cash but you should try a bit. Here's my take on the whole situation (market, baby, family, time, etc...):

Given the various criteria I think your best option is to keep it and make the best out of it for the next decade, because I think the residual value on that box is still likely to be in the $2-3K. I think it hurts to lose about $3K now if you sell it for what we estimated.

I say that because I'm guessing you're a junior or mid-level career technician and you still got a good way to establish your career. w/in a decade, you're established as a senior technician and in a better place with the family, you wouldn't even care if you lost $3K.

I'm just guessing here .... I hope it helps

Show me a box like that for 2000.00 and I will buy it right now. I will drive to go get it too. Around here $4500-$5000

heres a thought..

whats it gonna cost to replace it down the road?

If it's paid for keep it. If you are making payments on it oh boy!
Unless your having a kid and decided to just throw all your tools away you'll need it at some point or have to buy a replacement. That box will be around to pass down to your kid. I see no reason selling it. I couldn't sell a triple baY snap on for 1500 around here so Im just going to keep it. Gonna make a nice workbench
That matco box is built better than any other box you can buy until you get into a lists with 440 pd slides

Sorry if I didn't make it clear but I said in a decade (10yrs) that may become the residual value. To answer your question, here is one w/ 17 drawers @ $165/drawer.

The estimate I gave was 3200-3900 if he sells it today. Like I said, I compared it to Lista cabinet which is truly a heavy duty tool box to make things fair. I bring up Lista because they and other companies alike (i.e. Rousseau) are stepping up with their brand's visibility.

That box that you posted is not even in the same class as the original posters. That box is Junk! Lets see some pics of your lista tool box. You must have one your always bringing up lista and comparing everyones tool box too one.

Geez ... I'm not even sure how to reply since you're trying to insult me. I'm not even sure what I said that was offensive. Again, I'm sorry if I things weren't clear.

Outside of GJ no one gives a damn about lista. I had never even heard of them until I joined here. You guys can say they are so much better but reality is in the mechanics world snapon, Matco, and Mac are top teir

I not trying to insult you. I just want to see pics of your Lista box. Or what ever tool box you have. Your the self proclaimed expert on truck box values. Estimating residual values in 10 years. What tool boxes are worth per drawer. Comparing it to Lista "which is truly a heavy duty tool box to make things fair"

i had always thought lista was the pinnacle for industrial but most of their stuff is too deep for a home garage.

this is before i ever logged onto GJ.
used to think snap on was the holy grail of toolboxes but unless you have an epiq, a matco 5 or 6 is really a better box, and i despise matco, lol.

Every Matco box I looked at wasn't as deep. I think 28 was as deep as they go. My Matco guy wasn't a bad guy but he couldn't handle a candle to put snapon dealer. He wanted a few thousand more for a non customizaed smaller 6

I got a pretty decent deal on mine for a custom built S6 that's 28 inches deep and 72 inches long.

Yep lista is just a brand management buys if there supplier sells it. Not like they seek it by name and buy direct. Same with shure, Stanley, etc
