MATCO 88 tooth ratchet

I ordered the 3/8" drive 88 tooth guts from daveblank

I only spent $20 but he sent me a cap, screwdriver, knife, pen, and red plastic folder (not sure what it's for).

It comes with everything: cover plate, reverse lever, spring, pawl, gear, 2 red o-rings, "pusher", small tube of Marvel Mystery Oil. The lube is red so I first thought it was permatex.

The design looks identical to the other Danaher 60 tooth stuff, just more teeth.

I counted 17 pawl teeth.

Some comparison picts. I can't tell any difference in terms of "smoothness."

Ratcheting torque is the same - great on both ratchets.

The matco head is much slimmer.

The red plastic folder is to keep all of your receipts in. It is also a place where you can set aside your weekly payment for the toolman so you don't spend your tool payment before the truck shows up.

I noticed something unusual about the folding knife. It has a "stop" when opened to 90 degrees.
When fully opened it locks, but I can't figure out why the design as the detent at 90 degrees.

The folder is for keeping receipts. I figured it would help keep it from getting damaged during shipment.

I wonder if the prices of the 60 tooth ratchets on ebay are gonna start climbing? I did a little searching and didnt see many on there but the ones i did see was at near full price for BIN auctions. Is there any real differences on the previous 60's bodies vs the newer 88's?

It's got 8 more teeth. I don't think that will make much of a difference lol. BUT I hear it's got half the parts of a dual 80 ratchet. Meaning less chance of failure. Not sure on the pricing.

That really isn't a factor. The Matco 60 tooth ratchets were a great ratchet and I think better in 1/4 drive than the T72 series. However, back to my original point, each brand of tool has different attributes when it comes to fit, feel, finish, balance, strength, etc. that only the end user can decide which they like best. It's apples and oranges, VWs and Porches. The tool stands on its own merits.

the cover plate is also made of some sort of flex steel on the matco ratchets, how long will that last. I also found out that Danaher owns Kobalt and that one of the Kobalt ratchets has the same parts at the matco ratchet... how long will that last. also the neck is a little bit wider and cant fit in some of the tighter places. my sales of the dual 80 ratchets have not slowed at all.

Sorry to ask such a simple question that has likely been asked and answered, but the search function keeps throwing an error message... What all do these rebuild kits fit? ie, can I toss one in a c-man thin profile, or does it only work in Matco?

I do not know if they will fit the c-mans but they will fit the armstrong maxx ratchets.

I do not know if they will fit the c-mans but they will fit the armstrong maxx ratchets.

They do not fit in the C-Mans b/c of the quick release head, but they do fit in GearWrench and Armstrong 60 tooth models.

I figured that was going to be the case with the c-man, was just wondering for purely intellectual reasons, I don't have any Armstrong or GearWrench ratchets as of yet.

I love my FHX80, but the lock for the flex head ether needs to be moved down toward the plastic handle or changed to the Matco style lock. It's a PITA where it is when using it at a 90* angle to speed nuts/bolts on.

The difference in degrees of swing is negligible....it is less than half a degree.

The Snappys difference between 72 teeth to 80 teeth is only half a degree for 8 teeth.

I believe the the Matco 88 tooth is supposed to be just over 4 degrees compared to Snap On's 80 teeth at 4.5 degrees.
The Matco 60 tooth was listed as having 6 degrees of swing.

I disagree with your assumption that because the Matco has fewer parts than the Snappy it may be less failure prone.
I understand the thinking that with less parts there is less to go wrong ...but that doesn't necessarily make it better or more reliable .......but it would probably be cheaper to make.
The fact that there are more parts in one than the other doesn't make one better or worse.
The one with more parts may even be better ..who knows ?
I am quite sure snappy put a whole lot of R & D into the design as broken ratchets disappoint customers and cost the company money.
I am sure Matco studied the Snap On Dual 80 thoroughly after it came out a few years ago before they decided to get to work on there 88 tooth ratchet.

Snap On has shown some of them with the the lock button down by the handle for many years in the catalogs so that is not new.
All my locking Snappys have the lock up high near the flex and I have never found it to be a real problem.
It may be more convenient near the handle though.
