Matco ADV failure.

Broke two 9/16 3/8 drive impact sockets yesterday. 3 year old matco ADVs to be specific. At first, when I broke the first one, I thought "no big deal, these things happen and I have a spare. I'll just warranty it on Thursday."

But then my spare broke, not 10 minutes later, in almost the exact same spot, with almost the exact same break!!!

I'm wondering if this might be some unknown casting defect that I have stumbled upon? Or is three years too much to ask out of a regularly used impact socket?

I went and replaced it with an SO socket. I'll warranty these two and immediately retire them to light duty home use only now, and slowly start phasing out my ADV sockets for home use as well.

Just figured I'd give GJ a heads up.

Not a defect. Once the first vertical crack is made, the metal will then bend outward which forms the horizontal. All happening between 2-5 impacts. Once the horizontal crack formed is when the metal would stretch enough that you noticed it.

I broke two Napa(Sunex) sockets after a lot of use 18 & 21. Also managed to break the 3/4 & 9/16 thinking about it. All 3/8 drive and were around 3-5 years old at the time.

the Matco regular sockets are nice . I have the ADV line also. Impact sockets break it happens especially with the high torque guns. My favorite impact socket is MAC because it is the 6 point cut all the way to the bottom so they work on sensors and other spots. they are also a little longer and work removing fuel tank straps on Semis. Yes you will break them eventually. I have doubles of some Snap-on drive line sockets cause I used to do clutches daily and the break

Yeah I love my matco sockets, They have recently worked where my snap-on sockets wouldn't. (air spring removal on mercedes).

Bu I won't touch the ADV line. Made in taiwan. Their regular sockets are great, and trust-worthy. The ADVs were brought in to replace the grey pneumatic line, because everyone stopped buying Matcos regular impacts and only bought the GP stuff. Matco wanted that money so they made the ADV line. I'm currently in the hunt for Matcos shallow impacts...non ADV.

ADV are the only ones they sell on the truck here, and I refuse to order anything from this dealer. Last time I tried, it took him 4 weeks to order a p522 gear puller, which IMO is ridiculous. Had to spend another $50 on a OTC just to get me by, and I use it more than the matco one now. So I probably won't give the other sockets much thought unless they have them available up front.

I hear you there. My Snap-on guy took 6 weeks to order me a couple of locking extensions! He was on credit-hold. WTF. Good thing I'm not a regular mechanic, there is no way I would wait around like that.

And what might that be.

MATCO

Seriously though, the ADV line is MATCO's lower priced Taiwan made line of impact sockets. They might not be tough enough for whatever it was that you were doing since you broke two sockets doing the same thing.

MATCO still offers MATCO stamped impact sockets that are tougher than the ADV line.

Yeah, after doing some digging, all ADV is, is a rebranded Sunex socket. Good thing I got these suckers at 40% off retail, or I'd feel like I got screwed lol.

Between the gear puller business, my experience with them selling me rusty feeler gauges and refusing to exchange them literally 5 minute after I bought them, and then this, I don't think I'll be doing any more business with them, aside from warranty issues.

Yeah, it ***** sometimes. Which is why I went and got the cheaper OTC to get the job done, and I dont even use the Matco one, it just sits in the box, on the off chance the OTC puller breaks.
