Guys, what's your opinion on the value of the Matco box below? The guy who has it for sale says there's a similar top box that goes with it, and he's asking $500 for the set. Also, does anyone have any idea of the approximate age of this box? I'm guessing maybe late 70's- early 80's? Thanks...Ray

I wouldnt pay $500 for the set, there are just too many better deals out there. On a side note, the pull handles on those are kick ***.

condition, condition, condition. presentation, presentation, presentation. If he really wants top dollar, it should be clean, assembled and photographed in a good location. In pieces, behind piles of ****, it's not going to bring much.

thnx, jack vines

Looks like it's been painted with primer. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for that roller. Hard to say what both are worth without being able to see the top chest.

I agree with Jack...you need to put some effort into presentation if you want to maximize your price.

jack - You know it! It is like trying to sell your car filthy without even washing it, having garbage on the inside, etc I don't get these guys, either they flat out don't care if they get top dollar or they are just clueless. :wtf:

For the OP:

A box like that was on my local CL but in my nicer condition (original paint, etc) for $500. It was gone within one day.

However, condition is going to largely dictate the price. You can tell the guys that take care of their stuff and the guys that don't.

What is that, primer gray? :wtf:

$50 max. These people need to realize that the value of toolboxes drop faster than gravity can pull'm.

I picked up the Mac version of that box about a month ago along with the top box for $250. It was pretty rough looking though, I actually finished restoring it today. I just posted the finished product here.

Thanks, everyone for your input. You've confirmed what I was thinking. And yup, per the guy who has it listed on CL, it's primer gray...a restoration project that didn't get finished. I've been wanting a second box for some overflow for a while, but I don't want to spend a ton of money, and I just can't bring myself to spend the money on a new Craftsman box. They just seem so flimsy compared to my current 10 year old Craftsman. Maybe I'll make him an offer and see what he says. It would make a good restoration project for this winter.

crbnfbr, nice job on your restored box.
