Matco Box question

So I usually have a hard time making decisions. I like to really gather information and try to go with the best value. I have 2 brothers that work on cars for a living and they both use Snap-on boxes and tools and I've always wanted on for myself. I am in the market for a "new to me" tool box and have been looking in the $1500 range. I know this puts me in the KRA Snap-on box range and I'm pretty okay with that. I am only a weekend wrencher and it is only for my personal enjoyment. I was talking with the Snap-on driver who is about to retire in 3 weeks. He told me he just took in a Matco Box on trade. It is a MB7525 with a matching hutch. He wants to move it because, like I said he is hanging up his tool belt in 3 weeks. He said shoot him an offer. What is a fair offer for something like that and will I forever wish I didn't get the Snap-on?

If the price is right and the configuration suits your needs then do it. I always feel like Snap On is a step above, but hey - it's just a place to keep your tools and I h ave been getting by with Husky.

I'd offer him the $1500, I bought a mb8525, bit deeper than a 7525, for that a year or so ago. Much better built box than a kra for sure, and personally feel a better box than a krl I had. The things a tank.

I am a snap on guy, that being said those older matco boxes are very robust, As long as the color is something you can live with, I would choose that box over a snap-on kra. It sounds like you can get a good deal on it. I say go for it and post pics.

I would want see it or some pics before making an offer, bit below your 1500 budget would be good place to start and allow bit of increase if it is a tidy box .
Be sure you like the layout condition and color before committing as that way more annoying down the road compared to what badge on it .

So the 7525 is black, which is fine, and has a similar lay out to the Snap-on's I was looking at. Is $1500 for the pair of Matco boxes a "you ****" deal or a "good" deal?

Matco makes fine tool boxes and you actually get more for your money with them it's the route I'm going check out what around 6 grand will get you with matco than look at snap on big difference.

Where are you located? I have a nice Snap-on KRA that I'm in process of restoring if you're interested in this. Still needs another coat of paint (black). just sanded and painted exterior of cabinet as drawers were in good condition. It was scratched up a bit when I bought it. Purchased all new drawer slides for it (all Snap on), new side handle and has original keys. I believe its a KRA4114/KRA4107 set. Have a Snap on cover for it too. Would let it go below your budget. I'm in NY in Lower Hudson Valley area.

No worries! Just thought I'd ask seemed like a good fit and need to find a new home for it soon. Good luck. BTW I have an older MATCO box and love it. Smaller than the KRA style though.

For $1500 for a hutch and box is a steal, if he accepts it.

I've seen that exact combo on eBay and Craigslist for 2.5 to 3k.

I bought a used black Matco 7525 about 4 years ago for $1600 and just added a new 6s Hutch last year.

Most people don't know that the Matco 75 and 85 series toolboxes are equal in quality and price as the current 6s series Matco is currently producing.

They were the Top of the Line Boxes before Matco changed the name of the line to the 4s, 5s and 6s.

If you want to add on to your toolbox, just order any Matco 25" 6s item to expand on what you currently have.

The 75 series are double bay and the 85 series were triple bay boxes.

The depth of the boxes would be determined by the second set of numbers in the model series.

The 25 for 25" deep and 35 for 30" deep.

They are great boxes and it will serve your needs well.

They tend be easy pick up at decent prices
7535 or 85 series get more attention, all proper quality boxes, 7535 is my favourite.
If 7525 and the hutch in good order it worth following up as if covered by your budget it certainly won't be a bad buy at all and better box than you likely get with same cash on used snapon, color decent too, yellow ones hard give away lol .

Talk to the dealer some more and then tell him how much you have and see if he deals. I have always been honest with the tool truck dealers and have the cash as to agreed upon date. A lot of the tool truck dealers really like cash. No problems with credit/debit card companies that take a percentage he might just do the deal.

I love my Matco 7525, I bought it used in great shape loaded with tool truck tools for $2800. If you can score one with a hutch for $1500 I would get it in a heartbeat.
