Matco cart questions

I got this Matco cart last September. Is there a way to find the model number, or approximate date of manufacture? I've looked all over this one, inside & out, and I can't find any mfr. model or date anywhere. Can't find anything specific on the interwebz either.

I assume I can pull out that middle shelf, since access to it is so limited. I've seen similar Matco carts online with more drawers, so is it possible to add another bank or two of drawers to this cart? I went ahead and bought the cart even though it has friction slides. Overall it's so well built that the friction slides actually function more smoothly than some roller slides I've used.

It should be stamped somewhere on the cart. I can't recall off the top of my head what the model number was. I think they were produced mid-late 70's thorough the 80's.

I just looked in an early 1990s catalog. MSC4 was the model at that time, but the lid was different. It did not come with the middle shelf, and you could definitely remove yours. I think yours is probably a later model.

I'll check again for any mfr. stamps or marks. It seemed odd that nothing stood out when I looked it over the first time.

This was a craigslist sale item, and the seller bought it either in the late 70's or early 80's. It's been all over Europe & back with the owner. It's had an "exciting" life, considering everywhere it's been & all it's gone through.

I get lots of hits for Snap-on, Mac, & other mfrs. of these carts, but almost nothing specific on this particular cart.

Cope: do those old catalogs indicate whether you can add components (drawers, etc.) to these? The seller told me that he thought that you could upgrade these during the timeframe when he bought it.

Older carts are a bit difficult to find info on as they were not nearly as popular as they are today. Heck most of today's carts dwarf most of the main boxes back in the 70's-80's. It should have a stamp somewhere. I'd check the back of the main compartment, right below where the main hinge is welded.

Interesting that the owner decided to take that of all things around the world.

Chris, I'd be surprised the cart was that old. Matco only began making boxes under their name around 1980. Attached is the catalog page. All that was offered was the middle shelf. Note the difference on the front of the lid. IIRC, there will be no model marked on this item. Taken from late 1989/early 1990 catalog
