Hey guys,

I am in the market for a right angle die grinder. I was wondering if Matco makes quality air tools, because I'm not looking for throw away harbor freight trash on this purchase. I was originally going to buy a snap on, MAC, IR or some other grinder but then saw this e bay ad. Let me know if I'm reading it right. I think each grinder is worth $165 but is it saying I would get both for $165? Is this a good deal? Also any comments about Matco air tools are welcome because I do not own any Matco tools yet.

Thanks,

Jason

I have a pair of matco die grinders I purchased 12 years ago. One straight and one 90 degree. They have been just fine for me, no problems.

Unless you're doing heavy duty grinding, believe it or not, but the $10 thing HF sells actually works fine.

As to your question, you are correct you buy one and get the other free. I've purchased from that ebay seller, they're legit, and either have a Matco dealer they sell for or are infact a matco dealer. That buy 1 get 1 is a promo Matco runs from time to time. Their air tools are quite decent, only thing is they're all made in Taiwan under contract. Snap-On has their air tools made in the USA but obviously if you're looking to pay list the Matco is by far the better buy.

My original Matco 90 deg grinder lasted at least 15 years, the replacement crapped out after 2 weeks. Original had steel gears, replacement had either cheese or plastic gears, whatever it was, it wasn't worth a ****.

I've been getting into doing a bit of auto body prep and paint work lately. I will be using them for abrasive discs when taking stuff down to bare metal and wire wheels. I'll keep the HF in mind. I have really enjoyed buying quality tools lately when I have found myself in need of something though. After I broke 2 wrenches and 2 breaker bars from HF (2 tools that I feel should never break when used properly), I decided that I wanted to start using tools with a little higher quality. I don't mean to sound like a snob though, I certainly am somewhat savy but buying tools twice in the same day kinda wears on me.

What kind of grinder did you go with after the replacement failed you?

If me I'd buy IR or Chicago Pneumatic and skip the truck brands.

Most of the die and angle grinders are made in China these days and most trucks use rebranded IR tools anyway (Well, unless you want to drop $250 to $300 per grinder for a USA made Snap-On.)

My MAC guy used to do twice a year straight and 90 degree grinder deals for $75 for both in a blister pack. Both are MAC stamped/cast but rebranded IR's in reality but for that price I bought a set each half year.

Given the warranty (not lifetime even for the trucks) and wear rate, they are disposable commodities to me.
If they break, the cost to fix is more than new unless 1 yr old or less if warrantied.

HF air tools are hit and miss. BTDT.
That's why I go IR.

+1 for the IR's...bought the MAC bogo set about 6-7 yrs ago. use the right angle everyday since as my main roloc holder...have a couple HF with a wire brush and goofy stuff on them permenetly, just so i dont have to take the time to change things around.
the HF's are rough and loud, but they work if for light use.

x2.....I bought a new 1/2hp straight die grinder of the matco truck and after 2 days of use the throttle hung. It would just sit there a spin slowly. sent it back to matco for warranty. They had it for 2 months, got it back and it lasted a couple weeks and starting doing it again. I got fed up and traded it in on a new 1hp snap on. That thing is like a hand cannon!

That's quite a bit of support for Chicago Pneumatic. Are the IR or CP ones made overseas? Are they better quality than HF?

Almost anything but the Snap-On $250 US made grinders are China or Taiwan made and sourced now, aside from DynaBrade a a few others .
This is not new and goes back almost when IR and the rest off-shored before 2007.
Thus the futile point of trying to iceskate uphill.

There are and were japan made IR die grinders up til then but you now either have to pony up and pay $$$ for a tool that still only has a 1 yr warranty or go with the others.

I've seen the current IR and CP grinders do work all day grinding armor welds for military vehicles . I have no qualms. $50 to $75 each. More reliable than HF if used professionally.

HF is fine in a pinch and a fine back-up tool but not a go-to for me.

Have you looked at Sioux tools? US made and can be had for cheap money on e-bay....

I haven't, but I am now. I picked up a HF die grinder today just to use, but I can see myself using a grinder quite a bit so I will probably pick up something else as well.

Keep in mind that even though those Matco grinders are "New" I don't think you'd have an easy time getting a warranty repair/replacement if they failed in the first year, (which is the only warranty you will get on any truck brand air trool). As you will be unable to show a receipt from a Matco dealer, I think you should consider any Matco (or MAC, Snap-on etc,) air tool bought on eBay to be totaly without warranty.
