Matco Is FREAKIN' Nuts!!

Today was Matco Wed. Our dealer dropped off the promo flyers. Usually, I just skim through them real quick while he's standing there and tell him "Nope, nothing I need in here", then set it on my box, go back to doing what I was doing then look at it a little later when I'm not so busy.
I did this today but what I found, I almost soiled myself.

$440 for a 1/4" metric universal impact set...and you get a FREE 1/4" mid-lenth metric impact set. Oh my. This is INSANE! Even if the combo value is a stated '$533.80', I'd like to know who of you on here would shell out pretty much my mortgage payment, minus taxes, pmi, etc. for a 1/4" drive socket set/combo as this.
This is worse than S/O prices
I really don't know what else to say. This is so uncalled for, i don't care how 'good' the sockets are!

So how many did you buy? I never felt the need for 1/4 impacts, Im not saying there isnt a need but i have yet to find it personally.

Why get so offended at the prices? Matco has in my opinion the best swivel impacts, I have the 1/4" SAE set and I love them. If I didn't want to pay the asking price I would have looked elseware instead of getting pissed.

Seriously I think that's where they're making a lot of these sales, the dealer tells em "hey, just give me $20 a week and we'll make them yours..." I agree though, that's a pretty ****** incentive to plunk down $439 on a set of 1/4" wobbles...

In "regular" times I would pay that, but since everything is tanking, I'll do without them, pass on the cheap ones, etc...............

In times like these, the only tools I am buying are specialty tools that a real need arise for, like specific timing belt tools etc..............

I have been handing flyers back to my Cornwell guy, told him all not ABSOLUTELY necessary tool purchases are off limits for me, cut my credit cards, cannot afford tools of this expense anymore, just because, I can't.

I sat down to pay the mortgage, car payment, insurance policies, bought heating oil and kerosene, propane, utilities, etc..............and realized it is beyond time to cut out ALL spending, sad but true.

Been to the grocery store lately! yeah inflation is in hyper mode.

Luckily I have ALOT of tools, and for now, they will suffice, even if all brands are not what I WANT!

Let's see... I could buy the Craftsman's and if I broke one a year for ten years and paid a taxi driver to run to the shop and pick up the broken part and then run it to sears and exchange it each time I would still come out with extra beer money.

Yeah the same $7 rails I buy @ Lowes.Today was also my Matco day...he never showed up, he's so far in the hole - I give him till the spring when he's out of business. So sad he's a nice guy.

naturally i cant find them on sears website but i swear i saw them on the shelf at my local store....

even the SK ones are cheaper at about half the price (put SKs problems aside for a moment) at half the price id definitely buy SK at 200 before the matco at 400...

I know for a fact my cman 3/8 deep impacts are the exact same as the one tech i work close with. Hes a bit ticked about it.

At school the matco guy told us flat out the matco and cman are made by danaher, with that in mind i see no reason to buy anything matco when i can get it from cman or gw

If Cman made a comparable set I would give it consideration but I bought the Matco set because of the small size. I could use the 1/2" to remove a Harley exhaust from the heads without removing the heat shields and save about 10-15 minutes a job. I haven't found another swivel that could fit where the Matco can.

Thanks, I really miss working with ex-cons and listening to Hank Williams III all day though. It was nice being the smartest tech in the building too and I loved doing all those engine rebuilds and what not. The climate control in the shop was awesome too.

Yes they are expensive, yes they are pretty much useless in what I do (heavy equipment) but Matcos swivels are the best out there by FAR. Their pinless design is stronger and swivels better than snap-ons. They are still too expensive for that 1/4 inch set, but I can see bodywork people saving a lot of time with those.

No, they're Danaher made just as the Armstrong Maxx impact swivels are too. However, there are no Craftsman or Armstrong 1/4 swivel impact sockets. i'll agree that the Matco, Craftsman, and Armstrong 3/8 and 1/2 impact swivels are basically the same except for, the high visibility markings only being on one side on the Armstrong and Craftsman versions and available sizes are limited.

Ok, they may be black but, that's the end of the similiarity. SK 's are a pinned design with a fat collar. Matco's are vastly better with the pinless CV joint design and finished much better than anyone else's.

Remember, all tool truck prices are insane. Weekly payments make the pain slightly bearable. Not everyone needs a full set of 1/4 drive impact swivel sockets. I know I wouldn't want to be without mine or at least the 7, 8, 10, 13, and 15mm.

There are always cheaper options out there from buying used, to Grey Pneumatic or Sunex. However, there are also techs that will pay to use those sockets.

SK makes a really nice set just like that 5-15 1/4 swivel. Paid 125 bucks a few years back on thetoolwarehouse.net

Havent broken one yet! Have lost them, however.

They work awesome with my IR 1/4 impact

This is why the Matco set works for me. Any set with the big bulky collar would not fit and would require extra work. At the end of the day we choose any tool that can make our job easier.

About 3 years ago, I purchased a Sunex 1/4" air ratchet & 1/4" impact magnetic universal socket set combo off our SK dealer for $99. They are just as good, quality wise, as any other major brand (granted, they rarely see any real abuse, but they're not designed for it).

for 550 you can get the whole snap on 1/4 drive set deep shallow sae metric ratchet couple of extensions and a universal.
You only need a couple of those impact wobbles. 10 12 13 maybe an 8 or a 7. not the whole thing
