Matco MT2120 (IR2115TiMax) drops sockets

Hi Guys/Gals,
I've got a Matco MT2120 3/8" impact. I use it a lot and I love it. Problem is, it drops sockets. I've already replaced the hog ring a bunch of times, it just seems to last a few days. I'm thinking I'd like to replace the anvil itself but I can't find a parts list for these guns. Anyone know where I can find it. I'm also open to suggestions on other ways to fix this issue. Its annoying and kind of dangerous, that gun is FAST!

Yes. I buy the hog ring and o-ring together off the truck. The o-ring seems to disappear after a few days and then the hog ring starts letting go again. Its worse on certain sockets than on others.

Do you use any chrome sockets on it? Be honest, you can tell us...:bounce: The detent ball pockets on chrome sockets will damage impact wrench anvil hog rings.

Never knew that. Of course I use chrome sockets on it all the time. I mostly only use it for speed over power and when I do have to power something off I put an impact socket on it.

I'm going to do a test. New hog ring and o-ring then nothing but impact sockets on the gun. We'll see how long it lasts.

I also use chrome sockets all the time on my IR 2135QTimax and it doesn't have this problem. In fact it's practically the opposite, sometimes I have to hunker down and stick my tongue out to get a socket off of it. Been using that gun for the last two years.

You'll find the hog ring lasts a long time if you dont use any chrome. No cheating! Lol

I've been through this before. 3/8" impacts are the worst offenders.

Yeah, no chrome. If someone borrows one of my impacts, I make sure they don't use chrome on my gun.

Really? Didn't know you weren't supposed to use chrome on impacts?

Only thing I'll use chrome on is a 1/4 hex adapter. And that's just because I haven't bought a 1/4 impact set yet.

There's actually safety reasons not to use chrome on impacts. Chrome sockets and extensions are hard steel and can can be brittle and shatter and cause injury. Impact sockets are a little softer to flex and absorb the impact blows instead of shattering.

Chrome socket detent ball pockets tend to snag and damage impact wrench anvil hog rings and mess them up prematurely.

Me, too!

I don't use impact sockets for work. But I'd always heard one could use impact sockets with hand tools - but no chrome sockets on impact guns. I thought it was because the chrome would flake off with impact stress.
Now I know the real reason!:D

Maybe a couple pictures would help? I'm curious to see the anvil and the detents in the sockets. Black oxide does not an impact socket make.

Most of my 3/8 stuff is chrome but I have a little 1" impact extension that I use as an "adapter"

It is a legit impact adapter. When you put a socket or the adapter onto the anvil it just flops around. It is especially annoying when R&I an axle because the M8 or M10 bit wants to stay in the bolt and socket just pulls right off the gun when you go to move to the next bolt.

This really isn't the end of the world for me, I've learned to deal with it. I'm just following up on this post because I hate it when people leave threads to die without resolution or at least an update of some kind.

Sounds like the anvil is well worn from what you're describing. A properly done socket ring will still hold a good socket though. The 3/8" impact you're talking about has an o-ring under the socket,it's tiny and kind of flat cut on the 3/8" and hard to replicate, but has to be under that ring to work like it should.

Never shattered broke or ruined a chrome socket with an impact, nor had any issues of retention from anvil on any of my guns. I have cracked a mac impact flip socket though, while using a chrome extension.

I get the hog ring kits right off the truck; comes with the rubber o-ring.

I guess I'll ask my Matco guy about a replacement anvil. Crappy part is my good guy retired a while back and I have a new matco guy that is more of a prototypical tool truck guy. Treats me like I'm wasting his time because I'm not financing a new box everytime I get on the truck.
