These giant pin punches from Matco look so cool, but they're obviously made by Wilde and stamped with a Matco logo. They're also stamped "Patent Pending" and not available anywhere but Matco. I'm loathe to spend Matco money on Wilde tools - they make awesome prybars, punches, and chisels - but their prices are very low compared to a truck.

Has anyone tried these giant pin punches? Are they handy, do you like them? Is it worth picking one up?

What would you use the thing for? My 3/8 pin punch is a Mayhew. I never needed it to be longer.
Long distance punching....one of those things that when you need it, you need it. There's not necessarily a set "application".

In case anyone needs the encouragement, that set was 60 on amazon last night....43 bucks is ABSOLUTLEY worth it for those tools.

Going quick on Amazon, still cheaper to buy the set from Lang than Matco. Now I need to find a home for them in the tool box. Got them for $46

These things have probably been sitting around collecting dust for a while. All of a sudden they're flying off the shelves. Cant help but have a chuckle wondering if the guy pulling the orders is scratching his head wondering why there's a run on them all of a sudden. :ROFLMAO:

Yeah, these are not new. I was looking at buying them a few years ago.

That's so funny. I thought this looked like a cool tool for punching something hard to reach, turns out it's Lang not Wilde and exactly the tool truck ripoff I expected. Thanks man! I picked up a set of the Carlyle ones for cute blue handles.

Cheaper to buy a full set of 3 Carlyles, with tax and shipped to my door, than a single 3/8ths one with a Matco logo on the handle. You guys are the best.

Wilde most likely makes these for Lang. They will not answer this if you ask them, I did, but it's 110% their handles.

Ordered earlier at 46, sale price disappeared back up to 64. Still way better than Matco and cheaper than what they are Lang's site (85 for the set there)

Yeah, the Carlyle ones can be found by just googling Carlyle pin punches https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/CHTLRPPS3
They're definitely a different OEM - different handle and punch, probably made in Taiwan. I might return them and get the Langs - they're cheaper and if I'm ever gonna hit the back of a 16" long 3/8th punch with a big hammer I probably wanna be sure it's gonna live through the experience.

Comparison if anyone is interested.....the animals have wailed on the Carlyle a few times and they have held up pretty decent, but the Langs are a bit more sturdy in my experience.

ouch I also wonder how Matco can look in the mirror and smile at their customers day in and day out, I suppose you are paying for that warranty, but still it hurts.

You guys talked me into a set. I got them straight from NTD (the original $43 seller on Amazon) along with some other stuff I've been wanting.

Giddyup

eta: d'oh! that was quick...oh well, I guarantee they will drop to $43 again soon

I missed out on that $43 price when this thread was new as by the time I clicked the price had changed already to $64.

So, taking FigN-m's advise, I set up a 'Camel Camel Camel' price alert and Mar 31 I got the email letting me know the price had dropped to $43 again (Amazon seller/'ships from': National Tool Warehouse), and about 3 days later these arrived ...

That's funny, I just looked at Amazon after you replied and they're back to $65 again.

IIRC when I visited the Amazon page as soon as I saw the price drop alert it only showed as having one available, so the price probably went back up just as soon as I ordered, kind of like what happened the day this thread went up. Those price drops are often a snooze-you-lose kind of thing.

Lining up engine/trans mounts through the wheel well instead of using a long tapered punch like a caveman? Epsteins has these in 4 sizes.
My uncle told me not to use punches to line up engine mounts because you could knock off a popweld nut on the other side. Idk if it’s an old wives tale but it seemed like it could happen so honestly any mounts I just keep readjusting the jack until it lines up right

I have the Snap On 3/8 version SPLR38R, I bought it for knocking the steering cable through outboard motors when the cable is seized in the tilt tube, it is perfect for that one application!

They only break off if they're in a highly inaccessible location. If i can break it by hand, then the engine/trans probably would've done it soon after anyway:confused:
