Today I took a chance and bought a Matco MD4000F (OTC rebadge) from a pawn store for $150. Of course after reading some of info on this board, I was naturally interested in trying out a scope. I happen to come across this as it was listed on craigslist and I drove after work to check it out.

It comes with what looks to be the full set of accessories (leads, clamp, backprobes, case, etc), it powered up in the store and I could check the different menu options and everyting appeared to be working. Based on these boards the OTC scopes aren't the best so I thought I'd take a chance for $150. The pawn store had a warranty so if it doesn't work, they will give me the money back. The software is updated through 2006.

So how did i do? Is it worth the money given it might not be the best scope? I am looking forward to checking out how it works.

Has anyone used one of these? I hooked it up to the crank sensor on my jeep. It worked, but was disappointed that you can't see any history which means you are relegated to only seeing what you can hold one screen. I could change the time scale (horizonal axis) to see several waveforms but they were in so little detail that wasn't usable other than knowing they are there. Or I could change the timescale to see one waveform (one tooth of the flywheel going by the sensor) but then you wouldn't be able to compare to the others.

Nothing is wrong with the jeep, just playing. Just seems like it's a limited in capabilities. Either that or I don't know how to use it yet....which is very possible.

i have not played with the matco scope you should bbe able to disguish signals easily might want to look into any training offered carquest has a few classes. i can do crank cam correlations fine on a 15 year old vantage you can do it on the matco scope. got to learn your scales first, then you be diagnosing things in no time. add pressure transducer to the mix and you can even diag jumped tbelts, bent valves and much more.
