Matco Silver Eagle tool quality??

I just bought a 3/8" Matco Silver Eagle set of Sockets. I got them for $90.00 on Ebay. The model number for them is SBSE59P. I want to know what the quality of these tools is like, and if they can endure heavy use once in a while. Also anyone else who has a set of these could you let me know your experience with them? Thanks in advance.

I used a $50 husky tool set from home depot at a machine shop i work at for 4 months untill I upgraded to sunex impact sockets. I used the sockets with a impact gun removing head bolts, crank bolts, etc and they held up fine. I think the sockets are plenty tough. Silver eagle and husky sockets are the same

Why would someone pay the premium for tool truck and go with the silver eagle stuff?

$90 doesn't seem terrible and I'm not bashing the op but it just seems money would be much better on gearwrench or something.

I've used their master bit socket set, and it was great for an import set.

Food for thought; This picture was posted on the "Truck Tool Equivalents 2.0 Thread". Member ordered a Silver Eagle socket set, and one of the sockets was double stamped with "Husky", another Apex tool brand.

That's interesting about husky. I've only used silver eagle extensions and I think they're nice.

That was me ^^^^ yes they are the same as one of the husky versions. As far as quality, I use mine daily for work. They are alright. I can't complain about build quality, they have held up to heavy abuse. Although I would recommend just running by home depot and getting the husky versions and saving some coin versus buying off a truck ( not that the op did). I can't remember the cost because I got the while 1/4" set free when I got the air ratchet.

LMAO!!!!

I am sorry seems like you over paid.

For the price of that you can score snappys on a good deal. Atleast went with SK or ask before you buy here.

These guys know tools better then the reps that sell them. Thanks for ther facts as I was temtped to buy Silver Eagle Torx Set for home use. I did not feel like shelling out 350 plu for the snap on master peice set again

I have some Silver Eagle Torx and they ****. They break, a lot. I'm to the point where I've stopped warrantying them and just replacing them with Carlyle from Napa. Much better quality IMO. Haven't broken one of those yet.

Now that's pretty hilarious with the double stamping....
So I guess Silver Eagle is made in China rather than Taiwan?

I was wondering who made Husky sockets. I'm sure they work just fine, but they really look like a few substantial steps below Kobalt, or Gearwrench. I wouldn't have a problem paying the $10 they cost if I actually needed a set though. :spit:

I have a 1/4" set that I got a deal on. They are cheap and the finish isn't great. That being said, I have beat on them and use them with s 1/4" air ratchet and have only ever broke one socket. I can't complain.

I have the torx sockets. They are complete garbage. I don't even know why I bought them. I have broken every one I have used. Usually on the first try.

I had a silver eagle air hammer too. I just bought it as a backup. Got rid of that right away

Just a correction. Matco is not a part of Apex, they remain owned by Danaher. Likewise Husky is a Home Depot brand (previous supplied by Stanley) and is also not a part of Apex. Suppliers for either can change any time their current production contracts expire.

I bought a set of Silver Eagle 3/8 impact socket set (12pt.) a little over a year ago, they were absolute garbage and the end of Matco for me. This was after I tried the Silver Eagle Torx set prior and had the same results. I'd personally say stay away.

Husky and silvereagle are the same. My matco guy gets silver eagle sets very frequantly that have husky sockets and other various stuff in them and has to swap the stuff out with silver eagle stuff. I would never pay that premium for something i can drive over to homedepot and buy for a fraction of the silvereagle stuff.

i have quite a lot of silver eagle stuff because i got a great deal on it when i first started. i have the 1/4 and 3/8 shallow and deep socket sets SAE and metric with the extensions and what not. also have some random impact sockets and the long hexbit/torx bit set. the finish isnt great on any of them, but unlike others i have never broken anything. the only gripe i have is the overall length of the shallow 1/4 sockets. its the same as the 3/8.

First of all Silver Eagle is not Matco. Second Matco is not a premium tool company. Matco tools are all rebadged tools from other manufacturers with the exception of their toolboxes. S-K would have been a better choice for the money as they are made in USA...

To answer the original question, they are good quality and you should have no issues with them. Think of them as Matco's Blue-point

Oh really? I get that they don't make tools. But they do sell and service premium tools

My Matco rep busts his *** to get me what I need when I need it. He is way less shady than the snap on rep who is not allowed inside our building, he can post up outside in the lot but there have been times where tools come up missing and he has the same tool on special with new grips.

The Mac guy is just an *** and doesn't bother driving his tool truck to the shop now. He comes around in his pickup to collect.

I have a set of 1/4 drive Gearwrench sockets and I lost the 5/16. I went to HD and it is IDENTICAL in every way. Except it says Husky. Same size length wise and same thickness. Chrome is a touch off but that's it. Actually Home Depot is now my go to big box store for tools in a pinch. And sometimes even a destination. I bought some Milwaukee locking pliers and they are really nice. I bought most of my Klein stuff there. Lowes used to be my favorite and since they cheaped out on everything just about I don't even go in there now. The selection and quality brands are better at HD.

Probably no better than the taiwan sets anywhere else. Warranty might be marginally better if it exists and you're lazy. These are taiwan sockets right? I wouldn't pay no 90 bucks for a 15 dollar set of sockets anywhere else man. I don't think they're made to any better spec than the best retail taiwan set...uh kobalt(?)...but hey you already paid so...

Wait-->Did someone say they are chinese? Holy **** not cool. 90 bucks for china? Oh my sweet tacos that's not good.

Do you have a personal vendetta against Matco? While they really just sell tools there are some tools that are considered premium. It seems any time Matco comes up on here you go out of your way to bash them or anyone who buys or recommends them. Full disclosure I don't own any Matco but that's because I don't have a dealer. I would probably buy some.
