So I got a full set of MATCO tamper resistant torx sockets off of Craigslist for 30 bux. Only problem is the bit part has bad surface rust. I read about soaking them in in vinegar. Should I just toss all the sockets in a jar of white vinegar overnight and pull em out the next day and rinse em off with water then wipe em with some pb blaster?

Can someone answer this for me...are there different types of tamper torx bits. These tamper ones the edges of the star points are more rounded then the normal torx bits. I thought they were the same...just had a hole in the center for the security bolts

Soak in penetrating oil (overnight) then wire brush. See what comes off and what stays on. Then try something else. Oil after you get everything off...could just throw them in old motor oil for ten minutes (give or take) then wipe them down.

Ughh. That's annoying, now that I know that I wish I wouldn't have bought them

I'm a big fan of using vinegar for rust removal, I have soaked plenty of rusty parts in vinegar and always am happy with how clean the parts come out after soaking. I would try that method first, followed by a rinse then soaking in a good oil.

They came up nice.

Now just make sure you spray them with some WD40 or wipe them with some oil to make sure they stay nice if you're storing them.

Yeah they definitely look like torx plus btw.

Thank you sir! I think they did aswell. I put them in a bowl of white vinegar late saturday night and pulled them out Tuesday evening and gave them a baking soda bath then hit em with the heat gun followed by a oil soak and wd40 spray down.
Was my first time doing the vinegar thing and I like it

LTS 3 will leave a perfect film on there to protect them.
