Pickup only is the kiss of death on bids.

I don't think he will end up getting much more than $2k, and the person that buys it will be insulting him, and it will still get sold. May take a year or more to get there though.

People forget that just because they don't get a discount from the truck that many other people do, especially students in a supported tech program might get that box brand new for less than he is asking.

He had it for sale on Craigslist in December of last year. I emailed him yesterday to find out if he had sold it and said no but that it's on ebay with no bids. I'm inclined to go look at it tomorrow.

I agree that most people would not bid on such an item if they are not local.

I have a trailer to it's not too much trouble for me to transport.

I wonder if he got that customized via the site's configurator. Wouldn't be suprised if he just bought it when the economy started biting people in the ***

I called Matco and they said MSRP which I don't think anyone pays was $8,757. The person I spoke with said she thought they just stopped making that box last year and that it was definately a very heavy duty model.

Yeah I was going to say that the retail price was probably quite a bit more than $4000. I'd say if the box is absolutely perfect, that would be a good deal.

the date of mfr on the box was 2003 so i doubt if the configurator was used to buy the box since it's a new program. while 4k probably isn't a bad price i'd offer hime 3k and see what happens.

This is why I always say if you're going to sink money into a new box, you had better plan on keeping it a long time or be prepared to take a big loss if you decide to sell it.

Are you going to look at it today and make him an offer?
There only like 2 hours left on the auction and no bids...

Yes, I sent him an email last night and asked him when would be got time form me to come by and look at it. I've not heard from him yet. Maybe he's waiting to see if it sells on ebay. I doubt that it will but I've been suprised before.

Still no bids and an only an hour left...
Could get some at the last minute, but I don't think it'll happen...

Good luck, I hope he becomes willing to deal.

Let us know what happens

It seems like I saw that same box for auction a month ago.

You are correct. I found where seller left negative feedback for the buyer who did not pay for the box after winning. "NEVER COMPLETED TRANSACTION. COULD NOT GET EMAIL OR PHONE RESPONSES"

I'd jump on that with both feet. Used to work with a guy who had one, and it's about as nice as you're going to get. Very stout unit.

If you can get him down a little, grab it. ;)

I've still not heard from him. I also left a message for him on his cell phone. Can not do much more than that.

I went to look at the box a little while ago. The owner was out of town but had a neighbor show it to me. He said he paid about $7500 for it new. That makes sense since Matco told me the MSRP was $8757. I'll call the owner when he gets back in town next week.

As far as the box goes I'd have to say it's in excellent condition at least from looking at it from the outside. The butcher bock top shows wear from useage but no bigh deal. I did not get to check out drawers since box was locked and neighbor did not have the key.

The neighbor told me the owner, whose is only 48 years old, suffered a stoke and is no longer able to work. He can get around pretty good but has limited use of one of his arms.

I'm not inclined to offer him something really low just because of his situation. If I was in his situation I would not appreciate someone taking advantage of me; I'd give it to our local technical college and take it as a charitable deduction. I think I'll do some checking on ebay and see what that size and type of tool chest is selling for. That way I can say to him that I've offer what they are going for on ebay and that's the basis of my offer.

If it really is worth $3500 or $4000 then it's just not for me.

look at it this way.........he's tried several time to sell it for 4k and it didn't sell, so the market say's it's not worth that. he should know what his bottom dollar is so an offer may not be an insult.

It's a pretty box with the orange color and the blue drawer handles, but I think it would've sold faster had it been the standard red with the plain handles. Buy a box with a special color scheme, you had better plan on keeping it forever.

Talking to one of the kids in a shop I go to last night that is still a tech school student. He bought his first box this week, half price with student discount, same for the full metric set that he got at the same time.

You need to figure out what the box is "really" worth to you, the sellers situation is his own business.

A stroke is hard luck, but the guy in a body shop I use had one, BAD, and 8 months later he is working again.

Offer him 2k - it would go for about 2,500 in NJ. If he's not willing to ship it and wants to only sell it local then he'd have to wait longer. No way would I pay 3k or more for that - I'd go snap-on only then.

That picture is deceiving. In person it red and the handles are black. To bad it's not bright yellow like a couple on ebay now, I'd pay more for bright yellow.

Bring cash and let him know you will pay him no more than $2500.
Walk if he doesn't take it.

Yes I'm serious. I could be wrong since the garage it was in was poorly lighted, but it sure looked red to me.

On another note a Snap on tool box, model KRL1023 PES, with almost identical dimenson did not meet reserve, with the most a buyer was willing to pay being $3000. That's assuming the bidder at $3000 was not a shill, something which I have no way of determining.

And another similar but a little smaller Snap on box failed to make reserve with highest bid being about $2400.

I'm starting to get an idea of what people will pay used for these big toolchest.

So yes I will be making him an offer when he gets back latter this week.

I've gone over the completed listings for the boxes that size in Snap-on and Matco; most of them have sold for between $3000 and $3500 at the most; those are mint boxes too. I wonder how much it's costing the guy to run the auction on this box three times in a row.

I have actually called and spoken to his wife twice and him once. I told them I was interested in the box, and I'd like to come have a look. I asked if they were at all flexible on the price and each time I was told "no, we've lowered it already". I don't believe that the number of times a price has been lowered has any direct relationship on how close it is to a "marketable" value. Like most of you, I think the price for this box is too high, but I wish him luck in finding someone who doesn't think so!
