he called me , tools have been sitting for 7 years, if you have ever purchased anything from a pawnshop Pot meet kettle
I assume we will see some of these in the classifieds? Be sure to pass the deals along to us fellow GJ members - If he has a set of snap on flare nut double end wrenches (SAE or Metric) I call dibs

Pretty sure the bad luck sticks with the pawnshop.
Way I look at it whoever buys it will be the one offering him the most money and solving his problem of moving it, regardless of what the price is, its still the best offer.

he said theres alot of air tools so as far as I feel those have zero value, most of the sockets etc are 1/4 and 3/8 drive he was a body guy so the box will be dirty as heck and most of the tools will have minimal value

That has got to be one of the most retarded and hypocritical things I've read in a long time.
When GM was in dire straights and selling vehicles for below cost, did you walk up to the salesman and say "Hey this is too cheap and I don't want bad luck, can I pay more for it?".
If Sony went into bankruptcy and started selling flat screen TV's 75% off, would you walk into Best Buy and ask the salesman if you can pay more than they're asking price?
If Snap On went under and was giving tools away off the truck for $25 each, would you request to pay more for them?
If not, the same principle applies. Somebody, somewhere, is suffering because of those cost cuts. Most of the time, buying something from someone in dire straights is actually helping them because they need the money.

thank you he called me, he let them sit for 7 years in his ex wifes house, the house has been in foreclosure for about 7 months HE decided to wait till the last minute to sell he was given my phone number 3 months ago. I was going to go over monday after work but "I dont have that long"

As for GM, my fleet got 23 lovely G6s with your tax money trying to keep them afloat. GM has many issues such as killing Oldsmobile to launch Hummer. That went well didn't it? However, GM really doesn't have anything to do with buying tools does it? The analogies you use are of corporations and franchisees suffering from corporate greed and mismanagement don't match the case of an individual falling on hard times, at least to me they don't. Please add me to your ignore list.

Actually, it's your explanation that fails to make sense. It's not on warmpancakes to sit there and render a decision on whether or not he should buy the guy's tools based on his situation. According to your logic, he shouldn't so then the guy would get nothing for his stuff instead of something. How does that help the seller?
Do you not buy tools from some people if the price is too low? Yeah, I thought so. Damian's analogy was spot on. btw, I don't put anyone on an ignore list...if I did I'd miss some pretty good comments!

I was in a similar situation when I bought my Matco box. The guy was out of the business and moving the next day, he couldn't take the box with him, he didn't have any other solid offers. I offered him less than the usual going rate and bought it. I caught some flack for "screwing the guy over" and "kicking him when he's down."
I don't think I did anything wrong, he couldn't keep it and wasn't having any luck selling it for his asking price, it was a bad situation but if anything I made it better by getting it out of his way and giving him money he could better use.
Go buy the box, I'm betting the guy would rather have some cash than a box and tools he's not using.

A deal is a deal regardless, am I gonna buy a new car for sticker or $3k below invoice..............Duh...............Take the deals when they come, what goes around comes around, you might be in a similar situation someday, and a guy might be helping you someday when your down.

The people that whine about it are whining because they ain't gettin' the deal. I bet if that deal had fallen into their lap it would be a different story.
I buy and resell a lot of tool collections. Good quality air tools do have value, but as they are wear and tear items with no warranty, values are way down from new. A $400 Snap-on air impact may only fetch $100 in very good condition, but that's still worth reselling. On the other hand, if it does not work, getting it repaired by Snap-on ($100+) is certainly not an option. But air tools are not that hard to fix, and if you can put $20 in parts in to get it working, it's worthwhile. Snap-on tools are the easiest to get parts for.

he cant measure. might explain the divorce? Box needed some love bad the bearings for the drawers were nasty the top drawer would barely roll empty had the bearings soaking for 5 hours, had to scrub them with a brush they are spotless now
