looking for a quick way to determine how much lumber i will need for a certain square ft garage or addition, just say for example a 10x10 addition 16in. on center. i seem to get close then my brain gets scrammbled ,thanks

There is no "quick" way to accomplish this. What you want to do is a "material take-off". This is where you break down the building in "segments" and determine what material it takes to construct each segment. You need to do this on paper and be orderly and detail oriented.

Material does not follow a "per sq ft" pattern. Things like span & roof angle along with material std length play into the requirements/costs and are not proportional.

There are some square ft lists but an easy way to do some of this is look at "kits" from Menards etc.

Draw a picture. Takeoff are pulled from plans. But for every four feet of building you will have six studs and six rafters, + one on the end.

I always figure it up manually and generally add 10% for scrap.. . .

10x10 addition= 3 10' walls = 30 x 12" = 360 divided by 16"o.c. = 22.5 (23) buy 25 or 26 2x4x8'

You'll need 9 2x4x10' for bottom, top and double top plate.

3 studs per 4ft + 1 per wall + 2/opening + 3*wall length for plates. Also any header material.

I figure 1 stud per foot, this accounts for corners and door openings. then top and bottom plates

Nope, just studs.
