Unknown to me until the last minute my neighbors 1/2 mile away bulldozed their 1800's farmhouse and started to burn everything. I caught them in time to save some of the larger beams and joist. got some old door hardware as well.
I am hoping that I will be able to build a large garage with this wood visible, so that the new building looks like it was always there mixed in with my old barn ext.
Ideally a garage thats 2 cars wide and 2 deep with workspace and benches. Dont know if this wood will work for this plan but it would be nice to have a new mouse tight modern garage that fits in with the old farm.

The longest beam is almost 30 ft long and most of the other joist and beams range from 10 to 18 ft long
Do you think I can build a garage out of this??? :dunno: What size floor space should my goal be? How or (who) do I design a building utilizing the dimensions of the wood I have here?

Some other rescued boards

Nice save. Those old boards will add a lot of character to a new shop. I don't know exactly how all of those puzzle pieces will fit, but you'll find ways to integrate them.

Based on the pictures I'd say you better buy your saw blades by the case. Glad you got to save some of it.

Pick up a metal detector it will save you some saw blades.

Some of that wood looks structure worthy, but a lot of it not so much. I would say any and all of it could be re cut and used for something though even if it is just lining the exterior walls or for cabinets or something. Electric planers and jointers would go a long way with that wood to make it into paneling. Just get all the nails out, nails hurt wood tools and get pricey to replace.

One beam has some rot on the surface . It must have been a bottom runner on the outside wall of the house. It is 7x7 so I am thinking that even planed down it should have plenty of meat left. The rest of the wood was inside beams and floor joist. It held up the house and considering that a garage will be smaller I think this wood is beefier then any thing I could get at HD.... Even if I just get vertical posts and use the rest in a decorative way I think I can still achieve the old barn look that I want. I intend to insulate the wall and roof so and new wood might be hidden . Of course this is all at the dreaming stage so far. But it was free so Ive lost nothing if it doesnt pan out. GREAT advice on the metal detector though. Ive been wanting one anyway to find relics on the farm.
