I know I dont really see much on here about garden tools but I figured I would try anyway. My Uncle dug this mattock out of the neighbors junk pile the other day and I thought it was pretty nice. I was trying to find out about how old it may be. It is cast which I thought was nice and it has some great lines to it. Any input is appreciated. Thanks !

I don't believe it's very old. I have a few of these in different sizes purchased within the last decade. The last ones I saw had fiberglass handles. I can't recall the brand name to save my life, but Lowes was one place that sold them. I'm also pretty certain they were cast in China. Good mattocks nonetheless and the large size you have is extremely handy when you've got some serious digging to do.

That's a nice looking mattock. I've never seen one with the lips on the side of the flat end and the cast in gussets. I used to see a lot of these when I lived up north years ago so it could be a new design I guess like PBCampbell suggests.

We have been through a million of these things over the years between farming and construction and the shape is what caught my eye. Normally everything is pretty flat and this one as said has the lips and such. It is a great deal heavier than any ive seen to. So not sure how old (or new) it is but I think ill put it on the old tool wall just in case just because it has a good look.

Groundbreakers was the name, a quick Google search turned up Vaughn & Bushnell as the parent company though I didn't see any suggestion that popular retailers are currently selling them.

They aren't old. Cast in India if I remember the label on the ones at Ace.
