I'm currently trying to find a way to build a shop more suited to my needs. In the meantime I thought I would start a thread of my current work space. I'm open to suggestions to make my garage more functional. This is about to be a wordy first post.

I moved out of my parents house and moved into my Mother-in-law to be's vacant house, she agreed to sell us the house for the balance owed when my wife graduates college. When I was at my parents house I was using a little more than half of a double garage and I only had 2 tool boxes, my work bench, my tan cubicle shelf, a storage cabinet, and 1 project car('70 Mustang). The garage at the new place had holiday decorations, yard equipment, and grandma's stuff. I keep slowly claiming more and more of the garage. The garage was tight but useable. I changed jobs in the middle of last year and they supplied tools so I brought my box home. I fit it into the space but just hardly.

I found a deal I couldn't pass up on my dream car('73 Mach 1 Mustang) so I snatched it up. It came with a ton of trim and parts I had no real place for so this was the beginning of the stuffing into the already cramped space. The car was on back burner so it wasn't really an issue. My Father-in-law got himself into a bit of trouble and we took possession of his '67 Camaro which booted the '70 out of the garage, since it is fully restored. I found a carport for sale and put the '70 and '73 Mustangs under it in the backyard. Not long after that, we took possession of his '67 Mustang which kicked the '70 out of the carport. The '67 is a third project car with it's own pile of parts waiting to be installed.

Now I've taken over most of the garage and have a lot of under utilized shelf space. There are spare parts for every vehicle at the house beside the Camaro and my wife's Focus crammed into this single car garage. There is still a small selection of holiday decorations and grandma's stuff in the garage. In the near future I plan to move all the parts for the '67 and '73 onto these shelves as they're currently inside the '73. The wood shelves I plan on using for specialty tools that have cases and some of the overflow from the tan shelf with the chemicals and cleaning supplies. I would like to get the lawn equipment out of the garage and into the shed but the shed needs to be cleaned out and organized.

Behind the garage is a small storage room that has the water heater in it. There are 3 sets of shelves in there also full of car parts. I also keep my air compressor in this room with a hole in the wall into the garage for the hose.

I actually ran out of space at my house and took some stuff to my parents house. They have the bumpers, carpet, and some trim to the '67 Mustang. A friend of mine bought a snap-on box and was looking to get rid of his craftsman box exactly like my red toolbox for $120. I couldn't pass that up since I'll eventually out grow what I have but I had no space at my house so that is also at my parents house.

Moving everything from my parents:

How it all started notice the boxes of grandma's stuff to the left and the holiday stuff to the right:

shot of the holiday side:

These shots are from a few weeks ago from when I removed the holiday stuff:

This shows the walk way I have between the Camaro and the shelves:

The shelves I want to use for specialty tools and cleaning supplies:

This is after I removed most of grandma's stuff:

I hung the shelf above the engine to get the radio up out of the way. I wanted it to the right above the work bench but the fuse panel is on the other side of that wall

front of the garage:

With the Camaro inside:

this shows how much space I have between the Camaro and the work bench, if the lawn mower was in the shed I could back the car up about 2 feet. I have had my 4 wheeler in front of the Camaro with the lawn mower removed at one point.

Matt,
Welcome to GJ! Your space is certainly tight! When you build that new space you will certainly appreciate it all the more. Boy, I know that for sure. We have a 2 car carport, 19X19, closed in to make a garage, with every thing under the sun stored in it except a car... God bless.

Ok I'm confused!
You have all those ford signs, what looks to be a big ford motor hanging from a stand and an RS Camaro
Whats up with that!!!!

Good luck organizing your space

The Camaro is in better shape than any of the Mustangs so they got booted to the carport. There are 6 Fords and 1 Chevy at my house. Every car has a story behind it. The motor is a DOHC 4.6 that I'll get to.....eventually...

A lot has changed since I last updated this thread. I did find a place to put all the parts from the inside of the '67 Mustang, and the '73 Mustang. I didn't realize just how much rust repair the '73 needed, and by the time I would be done with the body, I would have more in the car than what I could buy a rust free body for. I went in search of a good body, and I found one that was supposed to run and drive. The body and paint looked good in the pictures. I had to do a few things to get it road worthy, but I'm glad I decided to go this way instead of trying to fix the rust bucket. I took that car to it's first car show last weekend and won first in 69-73 class. It may have helped that I was the only one in the class. This weekend, I took it to the local coffee and cars and the core on the radiator busted.

On the garage, I finally moved all of grandma's stuff out, so except a small portion of shelves I now have full reign over the garage. I moved all the lawn equipment down to the shed. Our deep freeze went out, and we decided we didn't use it enough to warrant buying a new one. So, I took this opportunity to reorganize the garage.

here is the small storage room behind the garage.

The carport area was a total disaster. There were parts and tires just laying around under there. I got the storage bin second hand, it has 3 back seats, 2 sets of front seats, and parts for the '67 mustang.

I had three toolboxes spread out over my single car garage. I got tired of climbing over the MG to get to the third box. So I pulled the most used tools, ratchets, sockets, pliers, wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers and built shelf in an unused central space. It's an odd size 17.5" wide by 7" deep but enough to make all the common tools accesable. This helped a lot and I built a shelf on the opposite side for spray paint and oil exc. There's pictures of the shop in my profile. I also threw out stuff I didn't need or didn't use. I still have a ways to go but it's more livea le now. Good luck! I've been toying with the idea of selling the MG and looking for a '66-'67 Fairlane. I had one when I was in the Navy and it was an awesome car!

It's been a while since I've updated. Not much has changed in the cramped space. But, I did add a small portable a/c unit to help keep cool during the days I work in it. I do want to make something to organize my drill bits in one of the tool box drawers.

Due to my father in law's situation, the '67 Mustang will most likely be getting sold and there is a good chance the '67 Camaro will also be sold. On the bright side one of my cars can reclaim the garage. There is talks of me getting his tools which includes a welder, plasma cutter, 3 section tool box, air compressor, and maybe a drill press. I have no room for that stuff either but I've made things work before so we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

In other news someone at work was looking to get rid of some trucks that belonged to his late father so I bought an '86 F-150 for $60. I currently have $70 worth of parts in it and its almost running on its own, just need a fuel tank and pumps. I thought under $400 for a running back up truck was a pretty good deal.
