Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

Quick update with progress from today

Decided where my bench vice will sit, added a little extra reinforcement to the corner of the main bench for it.

Corner benches almost sorted
21445931114_5604b5b240_z.jpg

Mounted some bike storage hooks, these were dirt cheap and work great.
Also had to give the press some love, it didn't like being stored upside down for a year. Also gave it some wheels during the week.

Next little project is some shelves for the back left corner

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

Shelves started coming together nicely
22341702272_c66d3a5d58_z.jpg

Fairly good fit for the corner, don't look too closely at how square it is...
22365420921_2a20c1983c_z.jpg

I'm taking a break from the shelves for a bit, cutting up the plywood is going to be a tough task. The sheets are a pain to drag outside to cut and cutting them inside leads to mountains of dust.

Now for a little side project...
This is going to be a leveling base for my lathe. Ideally this will raise the height a little and provide a stiff base for the cabinets.
22167888429_81994e6b96_z.jpg
More steel more welds more weight the better.
22328727816_e5e992c754_z.jpg

This is the chip tray from the lathe, it's seen better days. Given the lathe is in the 400KG range i don't really plan on moving it more than a few thou once it's in place. So i'm going to sort out everything between the lathe and the floor before it's lowered into place.
22365425011_78f618e903_z.jpg

Paint stripped made quick work of getting the paint off then i coated it with Dymark corrosion barrier
22354739465_7d7604aa3e_z.jpg

So I went to bunnings to get the paint matched for the chip tray. They scanned a piece of paint i scraped off and mixed it up, seemed ok from a distance.
After taking the pot home and brushing the bottom of the tray it was very clear the paint was far too dark
I went back today and they scanned the steady rest which is the same colour and came up with the same problem, too dark!.
Turns out when they scan anything with a glossy paint, the result is alot darker than it should be.

So next the bloke at the counter mixed up a custom batch by hand which ended up too light of a grey.

Bit by bit for about 20mins he worked to get the third mix very close to the original colour which i'm very happy with!
21733636553_c2187cb4e3_z.jpg
If you're wondering the paint is Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel

Next little project is giving my vice a little love..
I purchased this vice a little while ago for cheap, it seems to be solid construction but only time will tell.
Strip down....
22365415761_8a69220c41_z.jpg

I purchased some Rust Guard enamel paint for the vice in Machinery Grey. I thought i best purchase a Rust Guard primer to go with it, bad choice!
Sanded the vice back and tried to brush it on....it went on like milk, too watery. Definitely would recommend spraying this stuff on or going with a completely different primer.

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

Those shelves are going to look so good. How did you work out the spacing between each level? Do you have specific items that are going into each one? I only ask because they don't look to be evenly spaced, so I'm wondering what you have in mind for them since they aren't adjustable.

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

I've guessed most of it Anth, really just a matter of how much vertical space you have then dividing it up based on the size of crates or things you're going to store.

I have a rough idea of what will be stored
Floor to first shelf - Shop vac + spare gearbox
First level - Heavy items like a spare diff, maybe a few bits of scrap metal
Second level - boxes of spare parts for cars/bikes/motorbikes
Third level - More boxes of spares - less frequently used
Top level - Boxes of stuff I should probably throw out, but the hoarder in me is keeping them.

I'm also toying with the idea of mounting my small grinder on the left hand side of the shelf. It's only used for tungsten grinding when welding and really clutters my welding bench.

Sounds like you've got it figured out! You could definitely weld some hooks onto the side to mount various tools and/or power tools, like the grinder.

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

For a quick and dirty makeover of the vice i'm pretty happy with it..

22353557090_2ed5ed80db_z.jpg

So i made a rather large mistake with my lathe frame, originally i planned on filling the frame with sand to dampen vibrations and reduce resonance. Then the idiot in me decided to drill holes in the frame for the adjustable feet :(

Welded the holes up and added some ears for the adjustable feet
22353555980_e8c94eb518_z.jpg

Cut a hole at the top and filled it up with dried sand
21918748084_76b854b4f9_z.jpg

Welded the hole up and now it's heavier and makes a dull thud when you hit it with a spanner.

Hopefully more updates next week, long weekend this weekend so plenty of work to be done!

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

Update for progress from last weekend.

So after struggling with the many ebay bidding wars, finally picked up a dust extractor for a reasonable price.

This is a Leda 2HP extractor, built in 97, came with a few bits and some restrictive hose but we'll fix that later.
It had been used to clean out aluminium fragments in AC ducts, the impeller has no damage at all :D
22408654459_18b314bba5_z.jpg

Another ebay purchase during the week was a pleated filter!
Fits nicely in the corner, cyclone separation build to come later.
22774846116_f922d7a7d0_z.jpg

Finally cut and screwed down the ply for the shelves...
22787344772_d77def710a_z.jpg

Update on the lathe stand; it's had a coat of paint and i attempted to level it with these leveling feet, i wasn't getting anywhere so ended up ditching the feet and shimming it to the floor. Plus side of this will be it's more rigid and i can use the tabs to bolt it to the floor at a later stage.
22178106124_ba02c55223_z.jpg

Bit of plywood thrown on top and the cabinet/chip tray.\
Yes i wanted to paint the cabinets but decided it would be too time consuming. I just want to make chips! (I've been watching too many clickspring videos on youtube, look it up if you're interested in machining)
22612863810_eec8ccd820_z.jpg

I figured I might start telling you a bit more about some of the tools i'm working with.
This is my hitachi TR-12 router and Bosch GKS-235
22774848556_cd4c85360b_z.jpg

The Hitachi is an old but well built router, it doesn't have many fancy features but it chews wood like a router should. Picked it up for a steal on ebay, previous owner used it once for a kitchen and that was it!

The saw is a Bosch GKS 235 from memory, not the lightest saw of it's size, but feels comfortable and sturdy for me to use. I bought this at the big store after they beat an online price I found.

3 sheets of ply thick for the benchtops (2 for strength and 1 sacrificial)
here's a bit of good old flush trim action with the router
22382737398_eb85315f2f_z.jpg

Finally had enough benchtop to pull out a purchase from a few months ago, still not sure how I got approval from the Mrs.
Note: Gap at the back for future dust extraction setup
22408659769_892ca93f7f_z.jpg

Starting to look like a real workbench now!
22787346312_75be0eb43d_z.jpg

Started making some shelves for storage of bike helmets shoes etc before i ran out of weekend.
22774845076_4059fe6cb8_z.jpg

Stay tuned for more updates....another 3 day weekend for me :D

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

It's been a busy couple of weeks so here comes another varied post of garage adventures!

The bike storage shelf is complete now, and hung on the wall via a french cleat
23050667749_b00c148a0c_c.jpg

So back to the Lathe! (apologies for the horrible phone pictures)
I cut up some thin aluminium sheet as spacers for the feet
23310467872_d78e58d915_c.jpg

Bought a cheap chinese level...A little aluminium foil was used for precision spacers also
23123153990_cb8e1e4f09_c.jpg

Can't be too dissapointed with that.....

This was my grandfathers lathe (sadly he passed away roughly 2 years ago), Herless SSB-10BS, Tiawanese made in the 1980s, probably a re-branded shun shin and also very similair to the grizzly 4003g in some ways. Good quality, very well maintained and organised.
My grandfather was an excellent engineer, building multiple down scaled and full size steam engines in his spare time.
I wish more of his practical engineering knowledge was passed on to me, but slowly i'm learning more and more each day about machining techniques and understanding what all of these tool bits and pieces are used for.
22790278834_71bcff4665_c.jpg

Lubed all the orifices and chucked up a bar
First i threw in a piece of aluminium bar, not sure if it was the tool bit or aluminium but it looked HORRIBLE. changed tool bits and didn't get much better.
I ended up throwing this piece of brass in and it came up beautiful!
23310181822_fb7aa5628c_c.jpg

I assume the piece of aluminium i picked up was just of very poor quality.

Next little project was starting my tool drawer. I know what you're thinking, buy some drawer slides and make a few drawers.
I'd like to think that not just any drawer will do....i want the biggest most ridiculous tool drawer.
Hard to find heavy duty drawer slides at a reasonable price
So i bought a pack of 100 skate bearings off ebay ;)

Drilled and tapped some holes
22791464243_a9dabbb7de_c.jpg

Welded/Bolted into the side of the bench, cable ties to hold the drawer
23122875570_4aa5da1dc3_c.jpg

Base of the drawer welded, yes it's about 2.2 meters long (7ft)
23336086071_1684d01d48_c.jpg

It rolls quite well! and I've only used less than half of the bearings
I will fine tune the system later on, still cost me less than half of a cheap drawer slide.

So a mate of mine came by last weekend with a smoker he picked up for free. It's a stainless steel keg split in half on an old school table.
I welded some extensions on the legs for extra height, re-mounted the keg and we got a little carried away with the exhaust damper......

23336064121_bafafaed82_c.jpg

This was a set of S54 ebay headers that weren't even close to fitting on the engine properly (don't buy cheap ebay parts guys!)

Originally i planned on only using one of the header tubes....but you have to admit it looks alright :p

During the week with permission of the Mrs (Not sure how i managed that!!) I bought a shell for my "Project Car"
Years ago i decided i wanted an E36 with an LS V8, very un-original these days i know, but no matter what....i'm going to see this through.
I bought an E36 coupe shell years ago but it was missing too many parts, it would have taken too much time and money to find the missing parts and rebuild it.
In the interest of getting sh*t done, I bought a '92 325i with a blown head gasket, in the colour i want (Alpine White 2)
23418759875_e817818a44_c.jpg

Yeah it won't be the ground up rebuild i first imagined, but it's relatively easy to strip parts for weight reduction in my mind.

Before the Aussie dollar crashed and burned, i bought these CCW wheels second hand from the USA 2 or 3 years ago.
These are dishes i could clean all day long....
22791608843_198ce60e5c_c.jpg

I should probably mention now that if you have ever come across the Vorshlag E36 Alpha car which was the basis of their LS swap kit....you might be feeling some deja vu..
Yes these are the exact same set of wheels, with the exception of 2 centers which have been replaced.
23336183331_dd2f251e79_c.jpg

Serious fender modifications required to fit 17x11's
23392576996_623462aeda_c.jpg

Ideally this will become a simple reliable car for spirited drives and the occasional track day.

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

Well Merry Christmas and a happy new year all

Apologies for the lack of updates, things have been a little hectic recently!

Over the last 2 months not too much has changed in the garage but plenty elsewhere!
I'm knee deep in some renovations to the Laundry at the moment which escalated into moving the kitchen and study doorways!

As with all jobs around the house, it was a good excuse to purchase some new tools :p
I've picked up a Makita cordless reciprocating saw for cutting 40yr dried Australian hardwood studs and plaster, feels like a hot knife through butter!
I have one small issue with the tool though, the previous model had an LED light near the blade which could come in handy when you're in a dark tight space.

Dear Wall, meet my new friend rip...
24762195295_7e49087398_c.jpg

I've also purchased a makita autofeed screwgun which has made hanging plaster very easy!

Reciprocating saws really encourage open plan houses...
24466673000_594fa70243_c.jpg

Ripped up some floor boards in the Laundry to replace some old water damaged boards nearby.
24644398332_9a2ef91f85_c.jpg

It's a real shame we're going to tile over these new tas oak boards..
24668718081_42dbbbed25_c.jpg

When I should have been working on the garage or on the house...
Day trip to Mt Buller to ride the downhill bike
24668721481_005902a1a9_c.jpg

Riding of course was followed by a 4hr scenic "sprited" drive home
24466962340_8a09a9217b_c.jpg

First little lathe project was completed over the holidays, bored out a chunk of aluminium to use as a bushing press tool, simple but I learnt a few things about tooling in the process.
24762010875_ab75f1db64_c.jpg

These hot slides were delivered today!
Just over half the drawer slides I need. some are 550's and some are 700's,
All of these are soft close, it was only an extra dollar or two per slide and who doesn't love slamming drawers?

Everything appears to be moving along well, and I agree about the tassie oak floor.

Check those headers for the doors you put in - they don't look right at all.

Not to worry sandman, the part above the door is only to hold the door frame/plaster in place, there's a lintel higher up that takes all the load.

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

Quick update on the last 2 weekends!

Started to get the corner shelf organised a little
25223275610_6475fcd747_b.jpg

the blown HG 325 engine from the white E36 has been removed and sold to a new owner!
25426123231_f331b32bf6_b.jpg

Removal was more of a headache than it should have been, engine hoist didn't have enough oil, then ended up buying a leveller because we couldn't get enough angle.
Then a ratchet strap failed (rated 340kg!) luckily the exhaust mount at the back of the gearbox took all of the force.

I recently made an impulse purchase on ebay :) so it was time to refurb the engine stand I've had sitting around. Previous owner of the house left this behind for me, it's built strong enough to hold a cast iron v12 if need be.
25426129171_10911e8521_b.jpg

It's starting to look rather dirty/rusty and the wheels are steel with no bearings, so time for a refresh.
25400400342_cb7909a45e_b.jpg

Cut/Grinded the old castors off
25400393902_376c5a9f84_b.jpg

Dulux metalshield primer, terribly ugly if you brush it on
25223293850_43366a7254_b.jpg

400KG dual bearing castors from the local hardware store, leftover dulux epoxy enamel paint on the frame and some other Dulux black spraypaint i had leftover on the mounting parts.
24888384814_d7d39b0a0f_b.jpg

Plenty of painting mistakes because i rushed it, but it's much better than what it was.

So this is my latest impulse ebay purchase
25151357949_6ca5ab0d06_b.jpg

L98 6.0L V8 from a Holden VE SS
Supposably has 40k on the engine but no ECU to verify. Gaskets seem accurate for the k's but the exhaust valves look rather rusty so a little concerned it's been sitting in water or launched down a boat ramp.
I'll crack it open in the next few weeks and we'll find out.

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

Yeah I couldn't stop wondering if I bought a lemon so cracked it open this morning.

I can't believe how easy it is to remove the heads!

The heads are major gunked!
25253405330_e6bd1bc706_b.jpg

There's enough gunk to stop the valves sealing. It seems to be a combination of carbon, rust and some sand like debris. But i don't think it's actually sand, it's much larger than your typical sand.
25253409150_300e4db720_b.jpg

The pistons are the same story, mostly carbon buildup.
The bores were a little rusty but no major wear issues, lots of dirt sitting around the piston.
25253412380_b5a283dd34_b.jpg

The water jacket has alot of similair crystals to the valves
25430477152_e2ebc888bd_b.jpg

When i pinch the crystals they smear into a goey grease like substance.
I assume it's probably from running tap water as coolant which has caused a bit of electrolysis?

Any help identifying the miscellaneous stuff would be greatly appreciated :)

Not sure how far i'll go with a machine shop vs toilet brush hone and valve lapping. Most likely everything needs a good acid wash.

Not sure if the stuff in the coolant is this, but GM put stop leak pellets in the cooling systems back in the 1980-2000+ years. It worked ok, would only dry when the leak reached air. See if yours hardens up.

Interesting, I'll look into this caddyman

Other possibilities I've found on the internet relate to glycol crystals from mixing different coolant

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

How far are you pulling it down??

Regards

Haha I'm not sure, I haven't drained the oil pan yet to check her bottom end yet.

My main concern is the carbon around the Pistons and surface rust in the bores. Heads are relatively easy and cheap to clean up.

Since the Pistons need to be removed to hone the bores, it begs the question do I then do rings and bottom end bearings?
Then the domino effect starts, should I get the bearing surfaces checked and honed aswell?

Machining costs could stack up to 1-2k?

I'd love to do a 402 stroker if I'm getting everything machined, but I don't know if it would pass an engineer's certificate. Not sure if they check displacement and ecu config for engine swaps?

Also worth mentioning in planning on running a 3 or 4 stage dry dump in the hope of extending the life of the engine. Having existing junk in the block may decrease the life of a dry sump pump.

Hey, great project. The crystal formations are usually hen you combined water based with synthetic based coolants. IT NEEDS TO BE CLEANED OUT. If that has made a lump between the bores then you will get a hot spot and junk your motor very quickly.
Clean the pistons, slap a set of rings and bearings and good Felpro gaskets thru it and go for it, JMHO.

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

Thanks for the info Terrick, I'm debating how far i go with the bottom end rebuild, considering pressure washing the water jacket soon to get all that **** out.

Wow a month since the last update, i pulled the oil pan off shortly after my last post
Bottom of the pan was clean
26297538376_81742c89ac_b.jpg

Bit of dried gunk on the bottom of the baffle/scraper but other than that everything seems normal. Minor rust on the crank and some dirt on the cam.
26231090582_a052a1ab53_b.jpg

Mate of mine came over the following weekend to pickup some wood i've had laying around for ages.
26323479125_88caf37981_b.jpg

We pulled out some old fence posts that were at the bottom of the garden to cut up for my mate to use for firewood.
Halfway into cutting them up i realised most of them were fairly nice redgum hardwood.
25720716963_174e6b7cfa_b.jpg

After this discovery i kept a few for myself :p

Bosch saw had a good workout that day...
(Definately need to work on my dust extraction)

I've got 5 in total, open for suggestions on a woodworking project for them
26231084772_5bc040c1bd_b.jpg

So last weekend I needed to troubleshoot some issues with my daily.
E36 Coupe with the S54 has been running great despite how much of a ratty car it is on the inside/outside.
Recently had some problems with no heat coming out of the heater...Pulled the heater valve and discovered this...
25720706693_420299ae1c_b.jpg

Possibly the original heater valve, 275,000kms on the clock so i guess you can't complain.
Went down to the local pick-a-part and picked up a good condition used valve for 25 bucks, works great!

Back to the V8 this week, bought a cheap 'tool-pro' valve spring compressor from supercheap, INSTANT REGRET. I don't know why i bother buying tools in Australia...90%+ are just poor quality junk.

Prepare yourself for the gross pictures...

Closer? never thought you'd ask...

Needs a serious valve job.

I'm very much on a mission at the moment to put everything on wheels!
Despite having a rather large garage, you'd be suprised how easy it is to fill it with **** until you can't walk around everything.

Put together a small dolly for my stack of wheels

Works great, plenty of junk stacked ontop

Next up; Wheel dollys for the project car

Cut up leftovers from the old benches. (love the dewalt cold cut)

Went to town with the flap disc and a little while later, ready to tack!

Few tacks later things started getting hairy with my tig torch, flipped it over and couldn't believe it...

Third torch cap I've busted in the past year! running real low on TIG consumables at the moment so duct tape to the rescue!

Back in action!

Welded everything top, bottom and sides.

2 dollys completed today, wide enough to hold 10" slicks

Rolls easy, needs a paint.

Fingers crossed I can get the rears sorted tomorrow

Re: 4 car garage/workspace down-under

Thanks Hewey, the saw bench is still far from complete but hopefully I can get some QST (quality shed time) in this weekend as 1/2 cup calls it.

Enjoy the long weekend guys, I've taken Tuesday off to hopefully get in some more QST
