Just a tip with you trailer plug make sure you split the pins with a screw diver as this helps to get good contact, I do mine regularly..
Cheers

Good idea, the LED tester is the best though, can be 100% sure the car wiring is working. Much easier to know if a bulb is gone or the trailer plug is faulty.

Since your into rusty metal things, saw these today and thought they might be your taste? https://www.facebook.com/groups/300159183417119/permalink/872190036214028/?sale_post_id=872190036214028

Have just seen this thread. love what you did with your diy coffee table, looks the goods! Moisture should also have a much harder time getting into the dungeon now.

Thanks beetle!, matching media center plans are well under way and should hopefully begin construction before christmas.
Keep up the good work with your place, i'm pretty jealous of that nice high ceiling and space!

Well the past 2 weeks have been a cracker in Melbourne...such nice weather

Thursday Night in the city....I'll give a clue as to why i was there: "Bernard Bernard Bernard look look!"
30985484522_be8e770b25_b.jpg

Dungeon painting finally done, starting to put up some support for my wood rack. Ozito hammer drill came in VERY handy for the dynabolts
30985483862_92c5c07f23_b.jpg

Unfortunately Friday i said goodbye to my old E36. Off to a new home in Newcastle where it will be loved, beaten, caged and raced.
30985479072_7dbf186a97_b.jpg

This weekend I went for a morning trip to 'wood heaven' again...
It wasn't a cheap trip and it still hurts.
30985484872_0255ebaf3e_b.jpg

This wood is for the media center cabinet which will be a similar style to the coffee table.
Unfortunately to keep the same style and look I've chosen the same size boards and they don't seem to come in thinner sizes.
Also unfortunately I don't have a bandsaw or tablesaw to resaw these boards into thinner and more economical sizes.
So i will either thickness some down a little or construct a rather heavy cabinet :headscrat
A veneer was something i considered but I'd rather not.
30985485022_88af636363_b.jpg

Also had some time to grind the dungeon floor
31092226196_5388211c7d_b.jpg

Wood rack in place and functioning well. Needs a few additions and lighting will be addressed in due course.
30321799563_fe488b7d8d_b.jpg

Despite the 30 degree heat today I did a few runs on the downhill bike up at Barjarg, feeling rather sore but totally worth it.
31014464571_2626f15bbb_b.jpg

Not too long ago I received a kreg jig for my birthday, today seemed like a perfect time to test it.
30321800363_5420ce38f6_b.jpg

It was fairly easy to setup and worked well to hold the glue joints in these boards.

Not sure if this will be anything like the final product but hopefully it's a background feature for a house number.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Our garden has become somewhat of a forest lately so I made an impulse purchase during the week.
Arlec 2.5hp electric mulcher
30439991613_45fe022aeb_z.jpg

Runs nice and quiet and seems to have had little use.

The blades were barely worn but also look like they have never been sharpened
30439991933_b896eefecc_z.jpg

You might be thinking why did I buy an old tiny shredder that probably can't chew on anything larger than a small branch?
Well it cost me 30 whole dollars, I'll get my money's worth before it's time to upgrade :D

Started working on the dungeon shelves this weekend.
25x3 Steel Angle

The ozito hammer drill got a decent workout
Drill bit that came with it decided enough is enough

Busy as always but here's a small update...

Dungeon shelves are slowly progressing
30760820853_fb6a484629_b.jpg

Finally decided I needed to give my dirtbike a ride after 3+ years laying dormant :(:(
31532458616_1c110a8778_b.jpg

Such a great bike but after 2 hours in the bush it reminded me why i've never ridden it much. The gearing is designed for motorcross and up tight technical hills I struggle to keep control of it.
30760851123_27f56bc7f0_b.jpg

The time has come to switch back to a 4 stroke, ad was posted last week and buyer put down a deposit this morning. :bounce:

Mid-week quick after work project, decided to make a holder for the many safety glasses I have sprawled over the garage.
31454576721_6e40ac1c5e_b.jpg

Not sure what happened at this point, little too ham-fisted with the router and saw.
30760825343_39513c835f_b.jpg

<Unspeakable woodworking acts were performed> :eek2:

now just needs some paint
30729048044_a5d7617dbc_b.jpg

Decided to take a break from the dungeon this weekend and do some woodworking.
Had a few hardwood studs laying around from various renovations.
I've had a plywood box for a bedside table since we moved in, about time to build something more significant.

De-nailed and ready to go
31423727692_9aff442d0d_b.jpg

Couple of laps of the Jointer/Planer/Thicknesser later..
30729049914_f16f55df19_b.jpg

Sorted, ordered and ready for final jointing
31570412335_4fb8d91fc5_b.jpg

4 of 5 initial glue-ups complete
31454573931_5107bf26e1_b.jpg

While waiting for glue to dry I decided to sharpen my hand plane
Can't believe the difference :) Keep your tool sharp boys ;)

Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Matty, your plane is set nicely to get shavings like that

Your timber has come up well, what sort of planner/thicknesser do you have?

Regards

Thanks 1/2 cup

I've got the older version of a Ryobi thicknesser with the 2000w motor. Just takes 1-2mm cuts all day on hardwood no problem. Relatively minimal snipe despite the flimsy wings.
It was a gumtree special, $150 from memory with a spare set of blades. Turned out the existing blades are reversible so flipped them around when I brought it home :)

The planer/jointer is a hare & Forbes 6"
It's cutting a little wavy these days so probably about time I investigated sharpening or getting new blades.
The cast iron bed is a little dirty but I'll clean it up at a later stage.

Best part of thicknessing all that wood was definitely the dust extractor, emptied the bag 3 times!

Small update from today's quality garage time

Boards are getting their first batch of epoxy fill
30854699744_b0d8d4e411_b.jpg

Started constructing the dungeon shelves.
30854698804_1697b94539_b.jpg

Progress by end of the day...
30854697344_e0c2abcb24_b.jpg

Plenty of swearing over blunt drill bits including a few broken but I got there in the end! :)

Hey Matty,

In your dungeon or "Gimp Room", why are you bolting the shelves, rather than welding? I thought you had a welder.

I like your woodworking projects. Love old timber.

Keep up the good work, and keep us updated.

Cheers,

Ken

Yeah I still haven't got 15A power in the shed yet and an extension lead to my nearest point is too far.

Also time, consumables and gas for the tig probably work out more expensive in the end.

Also having it put together with bolts/Rivets give me the option to easily adjust the shelves if needed.

If I had 15A close by and a mig, it might have been a different story :)

Quick pre new year update!

Need to haul my tools to a friends place to help a mate out so decided to make a box for tool transport.

31883667121_073a47879a_b.jpg

Big enough for a heap of tools, certainly isn't light either
32000712665_c0b6e18203_b.jpg

Mazzanine level for more tools
31626424260_f2b903b58e_b.jpg

No lock yet but it's big enough to fit plenty of tools and keep them dry
31963190966_9aa24c0793_b.jpg

The YZ250 dirtbike sold quickly within a week or so recently so new bike search started immediately.
I realised I need a step/bike stand to unload a motorbike from the Amarok and do general maintenance.
I remembered a bike stand i saw on a forum a while back and decided to give it a quick crack.

31883673351_61e10c6286_b.jpg

Done and dusted in 50mins flat :)
31963192476_94d81b626a_b.jpg

Turned out great timing making the stand as very shortly after I purchased a 2013 Husaberg FE350 with low hours and fairly good condition, really keen to ride this but it's not registered yet.
31191070723_c9e7eb270b_b.jpg

Started cutting the bedside table recently, first attempt at 45degree mitre's didn't work out well. unfortunately the length of cut means i need to make two cuts on the Bosch saw and lining them up is troublesome.

31160211844_7b7fd9a4a5_b.jpg

31626420510_7560a2eebc_b.jpg

I decided to try for plan B, creating a 45 degree router jig
Version 1.0 was an epic failure and needs more refining.
31883679881_d355b48998_b.jpg

Over New years i'm currently down at a friends beach house to celebrate new years but also assisting rebuilding their family holiday home's deck balustrade. The previous balustrade has well and truly rotten away due to the sea breeze.

To assist with the rebuilding I purchased a new spiral flute HSS (maybe carbide) up-cut router bit to make some mortises.
Jig made up and test cut
31852144262_251126fdee_b.jpg

Nothing better than a new sharp router bit
32000728715_0fc48f1618_b.jpg

Plenty of holes made, notches and more for the balustrade uprights
31160214754_f90a017c23_b.jpg

Not a bad view to work from

Start of the year didn't go to plan... While i was away 60mm of rain fell within 30mins around my area.

Garage flooded a little.
32077596966_77c1896c91_b.jpg

Luckily I had half a bag of dust/chips in the dust extractor to make cleanup easier

I have some time off this week so time to chip away at my backlog of projects!

Time to get cracking on some of these drawers.
32077592756_7ff13d7a14_b.jpg

Screwed pine to the sides to mount runners.
31741248950_2c141894bf_b.jpg

Made good use of my kreg jig for the drawers, 15mm structural ply.
31306518853_19dbed9140_b.jpg

Took a days work but finally all made and mounted.
31998457881_49f85eaba0_b.jpg

Thanks to the Mrs for sanding them, slapped on a coat of poly and cut some temporary pulls until i get around to making a more decorative face for them.

Thats all for now :)

Re: Matty's Garage Projects (Aus)

I like those draws, might get my brother to knock me up a set, that way they will be usable, if I do it then they will be firewood.

Haha don't look too closely at mine. They are not square/level or even smooth to slide!
But none of that matters when you have tools and junk everywhere and struggle to maintain bench space.

Thanks for visiting as always

Much appreciated dlcwent
I actually created this thread to somewhat remind me of what I've accomplished. Weekends always seem to be too short and my to-do list too long.

I just worked out that it must be about 15 years since I had my 'Berg.

Where the hell has that time gone!!

I think mine was a late 90's model...

Strewth!

:willy_nil

Nice berg! love the 90s style

The Berg is awesome, it's sad the company no longer really exists.
The FE350 is a 2013, so KTM engine (same as 350exc) and mostly ktm parts with a few different plastics and engine map.

I had the bike rec reg'd a week ago, most mental 15 minutes of life! between finding a parking spot between all the learners, scribbling details down, moving the car to the inspection depo and back etc i'm just glad i walked out with a plate in my hand.

It's been a little warm lately but early morning last week i took her for a spin up near kinglake

31842870000_e397e1e7bc_b.jpg

It rode very well, predictable power, light and nimble. Electric-start makes hills starts far too easy. The suspension is a little soft for my 106kg frame. I may get a stiffer springs at some stage. The front fork is smooth over small-medium bumps but really dives hard when you hit a deep rut. I was too busy tearing around to adjust the clickers yet.

Here is the final before/afters of the deck balustrade rebuild at a friends holiday house over new years.
Credit to Michael for the photos, if you like trains see his flickr here

Great work on the balustrade rebuild Matty, looks great (and it looked terrible before, dangerous even!)

It is a real shame that the Husaberg name has been discontinued. My brother was a motorbike mechanic, and worked on Husaberg's from the late 90's when they first started appearing in Australia. That's how I ended up with one. The place he worked went on to get KTM, Aprillia and Ducati dealership rights, so he worked on lots of fancy stuff, but he always said there was something special about a 'Berg.

I got an XR400 after I got rid of the Berg. Nowhere near as much fun, but cheap, reliable and always started first kick (with my right leg!) even if I left it in the shed for a year.

I only got rid of the XR last year, after feeling guilty for not riding it once in the 4 years since my son was born. I've still got my Fireblade, but I'm keen to get another dirt bike at some stage. Rec rego sounds nice. One of the things that puts me off getting more bikes is there's no cheap registration options in Canberra. The XR cost me more to keep registered every year than the Fireblade does!

Yeah feel sorry for the states without rec reg, it's $80 a year and allows us to ride most dirt tracks.

One of my previous bikes was a 96 XR400, great bike no doubt but the suspension and weight does make it a challenge sometimes in comparison to the 350.
The 350 is much more confidence inspiring and easy to ride at any skill level.

The guilt of not riding will not go away TwoBytes, seems like it's time to get yourself and your son a dirt bike ;)
