OM, are you all going to do the eaves next time you go up? because the great work you all did on the railings are showing them up.

Haha funny you mention it, we purchased 12L of white paint and used less than half.
The original plan did include painting the eaves but we didn't have enough time between the balustrade and festivities ;)

Yeah feel sorry for the states without rec reg, it's $80 a year and allows us to ride most dirt tracks.

Oh man, I'd have lots of bikes if I could register them for $80/year! I already spend thousands on rego for the cars, bikes and trailers, so it's hard to justify more.

The guilt of not riding will not go away TwoBytes, seems like it's time to get yourself and your son a dirt bike ;)

My son is only 4, so I think it's a bit early yet (I'm not so sure, but I am sure his Mum thinks it's too early!), but that's definitely on the cards!

I only sold my XR last year because I wasn't riding it, but I will definitely be getting myself and my son new bikes when he's a bit older.

We live next to a large nature reserve, but we are surrounded by neighbours who wouldn't hesitate to call the cops if we make too much noise, but I'm thinking one of those little electric trials bikes might be a good way to get him started (and keep his Mum happy)...

That little bike looks awesome!! but i think your over thinking how much your neighbors probably care. I'd like to think police have more to worry about than a child riding a small motorbike under supervision. Peewee's and CR50F's are real quiet.

Small update...

Bought some new ratchet straps last week..
Take note of the "built-in soft connect" diagram

Yeah looks real soft? :headscrat

All was forgotten though when I took the berg out with the old man for a Saturday morning ride :bounce:

Update on the small drawers
3 ply benchtop
31571240743_faa4b778a5_b.jpg

Added the side to this set because it will be right next to the dust extractor
31571241003_59303226ee_b.jpg

Yep belt sander wasn't a good idea for the edge :(

Back in it's place
32231960892_af8019e89a_b.jpg

Not sure how i'll handle the benchtop gap at this stage...i'll figure something out

There is a certain feeling when you organise a drawer like this...i think only James May and I share.

You could be right mate, I do have a tendency to overthink things!

TB, so you would not mind if I bought over my big ute and did a tune up?????at your place.

That's one way to find out if I'm overthinking it I guess!

Haha, that's a bit ****! Are those from Super Cheap Auto? They look similar to some bigger ratchet ones I got from there, which are actually pretty good.

All my bike tie downs are Aerofast jobbies, which are awesome, but they're all getting a bit old now, and probably need replacing.

Can you let me know where you got the organiser trays from please, or are they out of the tote tray things hiding in the back of the other pic ?

Looking for something like that for drill bit storage.

They're from Bunnings, Gripwell brand

I have another set of Bremick ones from masters which are excellent and have a nice long soft loop.

I have destroyed a few lately doing things I shouldn't with them, decided anything rated under 450kg is dangerous

Tactix storage boxes from Bunnings

They would be a bit small for any drills above approx 6mm
I think Stanley might have boxes with longer bins which could help.
Another way to get these cheaply is visit your local bolt shop, they usually have bolt assortment kits in similar containers.

Matt,

How is your floor coating holding up? I'm planning on coating my floor soon and am looking at doing similar, fill cracks and put down epoxy.

Would you recommend the Jotun and Epirez products you used?

Hey beetle,

Tough question to answer really, I really abuse my floor. As a whole it's held up well but I have some discolouration (pink) in some areas from coolant. Also a few dirt water stained areas when it flooded. The only place where the coating has flaked was where I stand at my welding bench, metal shavings etc on the ground probably contributed to that.

The epirez has done great, rock hard and no issues on any of the joins. But it is a hard product to work with (it's really sticky/thick) for small joins I would say it's much easier to use a urethane in a tube e.g sikaflex SL. Also epirez was expensive but that's what you expect for a product you can drive a forklift over.

For me it's been a success, it is a relatively consistent colour and much easier to clean than bare concrete. It's handled me dragging bare metal over it no problem.

I don't see any reason why I won't get another 5+ years out of it without any repairs.

I have since put down rubber matting at my welding bench for better comfort and protection.

Not sure if this answers your question

Thanks,

Matt

Minor project update should happen shortly

Hey beetle,

Tough question to answer really, .....

Definitely helps! thanks for the info on how its lasted for you. I don't have any intention on going soft on the floor either.

I've only got 3mm control cuts to fill, nothing too wide. So might give the epirez a skip on this one.

Thanks

Alrighty time for an update on garage proceedings...

I received a small Stanley block plane for Christmas
The initial one I received was jammed, the adjustment screw wouldn't budge.
After putting it in the vice to loosen it up  it wasn't the same lets just say.

Quick trip to the big store and it seems i'm that much of a regular there was no trouble switching it over.
It is a handy little plane, but design wise it leaves a lot to be desired.

Gradually cleaning up parts of the garage, organised one of the Lathe cabinets
32772690545_6987973aea_b.jpg

Started working on the shelves for the study entry nook
32392651030_8fae2a3c29_b.jpg

While the first coat of oil was drying i thought it was time to start on the media cabinet.
2 meter lengths seem to be a challenge on my little 6" jointer.
Admittedly I probably have bad technique but even adding an extension to the bed didn't help :headscrat
Just made the boards into bananas
32392579190_8402571b74_b.jpg

Gave up on the media cabinet for the moment and started some tool TLC.
My router stopped plunging lately so time to rip it down.
32772691205_c34c9dcd89_b.jpg

The locking mechanism was stuck and out of round from some gumby slamming the router on a bench.

Joys of a lathe... Slug 2.0

Back together and smoother than ever! :)

Went shopping last weekend and this followed me home :p
31958668323_765c446b65_b.jpg

Despite what you may be thinking, i'm not a Bosch fan boy, when i first started looking into table saws i thought i'd end up with a Dewalt, although the rack and pinion was appealing, the rest of the Dewalt doesn't seem as well thought out as the Bosch.
31958668333_23ea45a300_b.jpg

Initial first check of the sliding track wasn't great....10 thou out
But i have a feeling that could actually be the blade being concave shaped.
31929557944_b9687cfd82_b.jpg

Now to add to my project list is a bench for the table saw + additional outfeed.
Garage is a little messy at the moment :headscrat

Initial plans for the table saw workbench is under way.
32619273472_5d7da6d781_b.jpg

Started on my first quick and dirty table saw sled v1.0
32758039586_55350736c7_b.jpg

Passed by a local plastics supplier today and picked up some UHMW Polyethylene to help create table saw sled v2.0
32798268855_1bf4644977_b.jpg

It's a good thing I bought that Polyethylene... sled v1.0 was an epic failure.
32798268275_8c09f70b9b_b.jpg

sled 2.0 runners in progress
It seems they are very tricky to get them down to the correct thickness. The thicknesser loves to cut deep chunks, hand plane gets hooked up and i'm not keen enough to cut such a small strip on the table saw yet.

Most of the Aus members will know of the warm days + storms (30+ degrees) we're having at the moment.
This morning I was woken by a large "crack" and a gift on my back car-port

OM, you have plenty on your plate at the moment by the looks of things.

Great score on the table saw, I have had similar issues with table saw blades and runout like that even on new blades. Check to see if the blade fixing bolt is not over tightened.

Great work on the clean up, it sure makes a difference..

We cracked 43 C here yesterday and looking forward to a cool change over the weekend..

Regards

Hah my plate is well and truly overflowing at the moment, I seem to be creating more jobs for myself each weekend than completing.

Good idea on the blade nut, I'll investigate tomorrow.

Cheers

The fangs on the saw blade are massive. Think mine is a 40 tooth. Need to look at one of the Diablo ones with a bit more finesse, also need to make a slide so I'll watch what you do.

****** about the carport, probably better that than the house.

Cheers GB

Yeah I've been looking at the diablo blades too. Seems every man and his dog has one in the USA. I'll definitely try one out soon

Sent all the timber through the thicknesser

Definately not 100% square, but close enough :p

It seems Valentine's day crept up on me this year :headscrat:eek: on Monday while taking the train home i finally pulled my finger out and decided to do something to avoid being a sh!t bloke!
It was 5:30pm at this time, wasn't getting off the train until 6pm...time was definately of the esscence... :eyecrazy:

Mrs was out for the night until roughly 8:30-9:30pm

I was getting off the train at 6pm, Bunnings trip, got home and changed clothes by 6:30pm
Supplies required: small sheet of 1.6mm mild steel, red paint, green paint, block of wood and some steel rod.
Tools required: angle Grinder, drill bit, welder, sand paper, pliers

Apologies for the lack of pictures

1.) Make 3 circles on the steel with a roll of tape and a sharpie
2.) Whip out the grinder and cut the 3 circles out
3.) Put all 3 circles in the vice and grind smooth, cut 5 slots in each circle
32047837984_1c5118c7a0_b.jpg

6.) Drill a hole through the middle (size suitable for the steel rod)
7.) Secure rod in vice, slide disc onto the rod and weld
8.) Weld all 3 discs until secure

9.) Pull out your blow torch of choice and a selection of pliers, bend one section after another in a circle.
32890317185_82e0fbe2c6_b.jpg

10.) Find a block of wood, cut each side at an angle, sand edges and rub with wood finish of choice.
32510149630_bb6df96777_b.jpg

11.) Drill a hole in the wood block, paint your stem and flower

Tools down around 8:15pm and hide all the evidence before the Mrs catches you red handed :rocker:

Great success for little last minute project and much more rewarding than entering your credit card details online ;)

Well done, can't believe you got that done in under 2 hours. Maybe you have done a few before ?

Thanks for the rough size of the table slide too, I'll have to have a go when I get 5.

Haha trust me I'm surprised too! It is actually my first :)

Check on YouTube, plenty of instructional vids for table saw jigs.

I've been tempted to create my own YouTube channel lately but I don't really have anything interesting to build at the moment [emoji53]

Cheers everyone
