MaxJax Hydraulic Oil

The MaxJax Instruction Manual calls for "10 weight hydraulic oil" or "Dexron III ATF".

I wanted to use hydraulic oil since a pail of it is cheaper (per quart or liter) than the ATF.

From official sources on the net, I determined that AW ISO 32 hydraulic oil is equivalent to 10 weight hydraulic oil. By the way, the AW stands for Anti Wear.

I sent Gabe at Dannmar an e-mail asking to confirm that and received the following reply...

AW 32 is perfect. If you plan on operating in less than 40 degree temp use ATF-4

I don't know what ATF-4 is, but I'll look into it. One should make sure that one fluid is compatible with the next fluid upon an oil change. For my use, AW 32 will do the job.

I have iso 32 and its perfect. Unless you will be using the maxjax up and down continosly as an elevator any hydraulc oil will do the job correctly

Shell AW Hydraulic Fluid 32 is now Shell Hydraulic S1 M 32.

I think he meant to say ATF+4 which is a newer transmission fluid.

ATF 4 is for some Chrysler transmissions. Just has some additive they think is needed.
