MaxJax - New vs used

I'm looking to buy a MaxJax soon, and have just realized I have a bit of a conundrum. I have one locally used, or can go new. Looking for input as well as what to look for if I go used.

Used:
-Has 3" and 6" risers. I have lowered cars so I won't use then probably, but they're there.
-Original hoses, plus longer Parker brand hoses. Same fittings as original however.
-16 quarts of Royal Purple fluid already in it
-Will deliver for gas money only, is around an hour away
-Bought in 2012, used around 12 times. Selling because he bought truck that weighs 9k lbs.
-Used it to lift primarily heavy vehicles - Durango, other trucks.
-Has motorcycle adaptor though I probably won't buy, is selling separately.
-Is asking $1700
-Still need anchors

New:
Garage Equipment says can probably get one out in around a week. Is giving me a decent deal on it. Under $2500 after shipping and epoxy anchors.

Thoughts on it? Is a 3 year old lift going to have any upcoming maintenance or problems? Such as pump going out, etc? Anything I should be aware of? I've read stoke of the MaxJax thread, but there's so much information I may have missed something important.

Thanks for sharing the info!

You could probably buy it for $1500 which would save you a thousand dollars. If it is in good shape, I'd go with the used lift. I would think the pump would have plenty of life in it!

Unless it was stored outside or something along that line or extreme neglect (which I highly doubt) I wouldn't hesitate. I keep looking for used ones and have never come across one ever. So that might say something about them.

Pictures show it used indoors. Guy said he's **** about his stuff. So I assume it's been inside. But I'll look for proof of neglect anyways.

It's virtually new. The used one is a pretty good deal. There's really nothing that's going to go wrong on one using it as a weekend warrior. I use mine probably 12 times a year for the the last three years and I've not worn anything out. Mine, too, is virtually new.

Did you check your concrete thickness?

No, I don't want to drill a hole and have to fill it once it warms up via heater or naturally. I want the jack first so I can drill the holes that are actually going to get used, not have extra holes in the concrete.

I've got nearly 4" of slab showing (I'm guestimating) and everything else in the house was done proper and correct - the home inspector and energy auditor both have been rather impressed. I'm thinking I'm good, and if not then I can just pour the footers after the garage has some free room.

I would buy the used one as the owner has already upgraded the hoses and is willing to deliver it for just gas money. Can't see how you could go wrong here. Anchors are cheap....

Now that's a helluva deal. Now to figure out how to get it across the border...

Rent a uhaul truck or trailer. Have it shipped from the closest canadian costco to the closest mail office to your border crossing.

Bam! You just got a brand new lift and saved a ton of cash!

Kiwi did good!

If it were me, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used one, but for the difference from new to used that he is asking I would go new. You can get new for cheaper than the $2500 you were quoted if you shop around or get a special. I think the US Costcos have had sales for under $2000.

Now, if he would take $1500 for it, I'd go for it.

Go for it..., sounds like a good deal especially with the upgraded Hoses and additional 6" risers that are normally $100 extra. Your gonna want the epoxy anchors regardless. Unless your concrete is PERFECT, the pd58's are a hassle.

Check the seals on the cylinders.... My right one is leaking. IF you can demo it and raise it and lower it just double check they aren't leaking. I have have a rebuild kit sitting here and have to take it to someone to do but it's something to consider. I've read as well that if leaking sometimes the entire cylinder can be f'ed up inside....

I love my max jax, Wish gabe was still with them cause CS definitely went down after he left in my opinion... but it is what it is..

But won't I have to register it at the border that I bought something in Canada and have to pay a bunch of importer fees and such? Also, can I have something sent to the mail office and pick it up with an American driver's license?

Sounds almost too good to be true. If I had a friend to receive it, I'd probably do this quicker, as I could just say it was a gift from them to me.

How much, and how difficult, is the rebuild? Alternatively, can you buy new and how much are those?

I wouldn't hesitate at all and would buy that in a minute... if I didn't already have one. The cost of longer hoses and other bits would easily make this a $2500-3000 purchase if done new.

Might check the welds on the base plate as there was a recall recently of a few units last year. There's been news of it here recently to check if this unit was affected. Might help discount the price (Danmar is repairing these free of charge).

This reminds me, I would love to have longer hoses for mine so I could run them overhead in the rafters. What thread are the fittings? I hope to not have to take a hose to the store.

It's $2180 for the lift, $115 for the anchors, and $140 for liftgate service.

Also, trying to see if I have any friends that can take delivery of the costco.ca MaxJax so I can get it. Still would have another $50-$100 to rent a truck, pay whatever import fees they hit me with, and the anchors. Or I can get the used one and anchors, $40 in gas, and be done with it.

I think that's what I'm going to do. Thanks for the advice everyone!

So I just got home from checking it out. Definitely was nice, but no budging on the price. And I apparently misread the price, it was $1850. Plus another $100 for wej-it anchors he had. Plus $50 delivery. So an even 2 grand to have it to my house, with anchors I'm not 100% sure I can make work.

Guess I'm going new after all. Probably going with the one that will be a little over $2400 shipped. Not sure I want to deal with getting one across the border.
