I mentioned in a previous thread I've had bad luck with cheap or mid tier hardened steel punch and chisel sets, and a fellow GJ member recommended I take a look at mayhew. Now I am going to give the good ole fashioned chisel and punch sets a go at it from them, but when browsing through their catalog I noticed they had new spring loaded punches and chisels.

They claim you pull back on the punch or chisel and their spring force exerts 3500 lbs of force. Has anyone ever tried these? It's a good idea I'd be really interested in some center punches and a little chisel for rivets and things of that nature.

What's your experiences? How well does the spring wear down?

I don't have mayhew in that style but I do have another manufactures. They're decent and they'll make marks as needed. But if you try and get greedy right off the bat you'll find you'll lose your mark. I use the center punches a lot when there isn't room to get a hammer in there. But the chisels are mostly worthless since there just isn't enough humph to do what a chisel needs to do. Let me see if I can find a picture of the set.

Both sets look pretty similar. I pretty much read your comment as, it might be convenient once or twice, but I could do without.

I like the concept and hopefully they can improve on the design to have more force. I had a feeling the chisel ends were pretty much only good for small cheap aluminum rivet heads

I can't imagine what the chisel ends are for. I've seen ones with a pair of pointed and cylindrical shafts for door installations. It's for marking out the screw holes on the hinges and hinge pin removal.
