Mayhew Picks Opinions

My old Gearwrench pick set is getting a little worn out, so I'm thinking about rotating them into a road toolbox and getting some new replacements. My current thought is going with a few of the Mayhew Dominator sets, but I've never seen them in person. I like that they're made in USA, seem fairly priced, and offer numerous lengths and styles that are typically only found with the truck brands.

Thoughts/experiences?

They're nice. Seem overpriced for something not any harder to make than a screwdriver but that's life in 2022.

I use Snap On for ease of warranty but for you I’d check out the new channel lock ones. Same exact as Mayhew but a different color and a cheaper price. There was a thread on here recently I can’t seem to find at the moment. I’ll edit if I find it for ya.

Exactly which style of pick are you referring to? The dominators were replaced by the progrip series.

I have a mixture of older dominator stuff along with the newer progrip versions. The progrip handle is larger than the dominator handle and is hard dual material, kind of trilobal shaped. The Mayhew picks I have serve me well. I haven't broken one but, I'm not sure how easy it would be to warranty one if I did.

My son is starting his apprenticeship in a few days. I gave him one my vintage toolboxes. He really likes this one.. I know he will need some proper prybars, so I am gifting him a set of MAYHEW pry bars and a set of pinches. I see these bars on AMAZON for a reasonable price.
I made the end cabinet for my prybars. He is welcome to this cabinet.
I have over 200 pair of Petersen vise grips. I know we can pick out a few pair for him.

Interesting, I guess I didn't realize that. I've been seeing both all over. I guess it doesn't really matter to me what grip, as long as the metal doesn't pull out like the Gearwrench picks.

Craftsman‘s 4 pc soft handle USA set was by Mayhew if I remember correctly. It used to be on sale regularly for 20 bucks some years back, what a bargoon price.

We talking full size Dominator picks, or "mini" pick sets?

Been using a Snap-on set since the HF and Gearwrench sets break and bend, but also picked up the Tekton USA picks that have stayed sharp and held up just as well as the Snappys.

For mini, I have a bunch of sets from SO hard handle, Grace, CM, Mayhew Dominator (older ones with square-ish handles), P&R clones, Icon, Tekton, Witte.

I like the Witte (hard to find) and Tekton ones the best so far, the P&R style the least.

Fedwrench mentioned that Channellock picks are really Mayhew rebrands with a lower price.

Greetings: picked up a set of Channellock picks part number HP4A. with the demise of Pratt-Reed, Channellock found a new supplier for their four piece pick set and from looking at the shape of the new handles, I think they chose Mayhew. Anyway, it's a nice no frills get the job done pick set...

Mayhew prybars are the sh*t! Gave a set to my nephew years ago and I could tell he was a little disappointed. The disappointment did not last long, and I still occasionally hear about how much he uses them.

Mayhew pry bars are awesome, the hyper tough ones are good too. I think this thread was about picks though.

I bought the Tekton 5 piece pick set, made in usa, and they've been great. Seem strong, handles are hard handle style. I've used them to pick stuff. I think if you don't use the picks as pry bars they should be good.

I used the older mini picks that are now sold as cats paw, they we’re good. They will bend before breaking. I broke one 90 degree but that was after I bent it a few times a straightened back out a few times. I lose them regularly and last time I replaced with the cheap Tekton not the new USA ones. The really don’t like older tektons but they haven’t broken and haven’t wandered off. Cheap tools never seem to disappear

This the set I'm replacing. These sizes have worked well for my needs, but the blades have been pulling out. I would also like to get some longer picks. Quite honestly, the new GearWrench stuff looks pretty decent for the money.

I have sets of the large Dominator pics, pry bars, and scrapers. The pry bars are awesome. For me, the pics and scrapers are just so much overkill with the striking caps and are imbalanced. But they are all definitely tough and well made. I prefer my Ullman and Tekton small picks, and my Lang scrapers over the Mayhew.

I like the Mayhew "scrapers" okay, but they do seem to be more of a chisel than a scraper and are really great for parting. Hmm, might be why they don't seem to be scraping that well...

Mayhew is alive and well. They bought out Bestway a couple of years ago. You might be thinking of Pratt-Read, which made picks domestically.

Have a set of large dominator picks. They are pretty though. No complaints.

I have the Craftsman Pro pick set from about 12 years ago. I always assumed that they were made by Mayhew.

The handles are a little large, but I have not broken any of them yet.

My favorite small pics are Mayhew. Better than any of the tool truck brands in my opinion, and cheaper.

I picked up a set of the full size Meyhew picks a couple years ago and I’ll be honest, I don’t use them much but when I do need them it’s always a situation where nothing else would work nearly as well as they do.

Just like the pry bars they are very well built.

I thought Mayhew was the OEM for a number of other companies. If so the more expensive blend may have been Mayhews. We have no issues with them. Sometimes harder to locate.
