mayhew warranty rant

last year i bought a set of mayhew punches and chisels because i believe they are high quality US made tools. well i broke one recently, i have sent two emails to mayhew asking how to obtain warranty service. both have been unanswered. i realize that i should just purchase a replacement from another scource that can be warranted easily (like snap on or matco) but i like to keep my sets complete and original. i will have a hard time recommending mayhew in the future because of this. :(

maybe a phone call to mayhew is in order, but warranty excange info SHOULD be posted on thier website.

Maybe a third email with the link to this thread included? It is surprising what shame can do sometimes. Of course, to feel shame would require a conscience.

Sorry to here about the trouble with Mayhew. I have a little Mayhew stuff, it's been pretty good, but after hearing that they won't even answer a email? Probably won't buy anymore from them. Sad.

Best of luck to you.

Aren't Snap-on punches and chisels made my Mayhew?

yes, they are the same as the 150 line. warranty would be easy through snap on though.

Wow, really? I thought I had asked that same exact question in another thread and no one seemed to know.

I've been checking out the 150 line, too. Is that the set you purchased? Did you get the wood block set? I can understand wanting to keep a set like that complete and matching.

I agree, e-mails shouldn't go unanswered. It makes the customer feel as though the company doesn't care. If you are not going to pay someone to read and respond to e-mail in a timely manner than don't post an e-mail address at all, IMO.

Keep us posted on how this turns out, it may sway my decision on whether or not to purchase a Mayhew set.

Hi Krusty - this is not right and total company BS. We all know Mayhew and have come to expect this USA company to give us the quality we need. A sad day indeed. :(

http://mayhew.com/contact.htm

They have an 800 number, call them up.

I always prefer to call than just send an email. It's been my experience you're much more likely to get results calling than by emailing.

as i stated in my original post that's what i will do........

it just seem's to me that the emails should be answered in the name of customer service. i shouldn't have to beg for warranty service, it's like they are avoiding the issue hoping i'll give up and go away

Mayhew makes for Proto as well, don't they? I had two center punches warrantied no problem, from Proto recently.

Are punches and chisels technically warranty items or are they considered expendable?

I suppose it depends what the particular failure of the tool is..

Thanks, yeah, I was asking about performance differences between the regular line and the S-2 steel product which I think the 150 Line is made out of.

I tried to purchase direct from them the other day for the company I work for, a large Aerospace Company. The lady was nice enough, but they just couldn't sell to me. I needed to go thru a distributor. No problem getting to them on their 800 #.

Is there an address you can send a regular letter to? Sorry to hear how they seem to be ignoring you. I bought the 4 piece bearing race punch set this past spring and I hope I don't have to go thru this. Good luck.

Hey Krusty - I would recommend calling their 800-number:bounce:

seriously though, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that they are ignoring your emails. You might be surprised that, even though it's almost 2010, some companies aren't tech-saavy enough to use email.

I guess this is one of those instances where it would have been beneficial to spend a little more money on the rebranded truck tools just for the better warranty service. You always beat on chissels

As long as they don't consider them consumables I guess they would warranty them.

Hopefully Mayhew will get back to you soon.

no.....emails unanswered, phone calls not returned......i have given up.

it's a damn shame that a fine US company will treat thier customers like this.

I don't buy expensive chisels and punches anymore. Craftsman's large set, when they go onsale, and I toss them when they are worthless. I have never seen a big difference in any brand for punches and chisels, I consider them disposable items. The truck tool companies warranty them if they feel like it, but you are paying for 3X the price when you buy the set, soo...........One is really buying several sets worth when they buy the one SO, Cornwell, whatever, set...............cutting tools fail, just inevitable.

Punches Are definitely disposable items but those Craftsman pin punches are JUNK... Period. I picked up a Snap on set off ebay worth the money and have been using them for around a year and as long as you use the correct one for the application they are Superior to the Craftsman ones regardless if there black or painted fancy red. Theres no doubt Snap on punches are more expensive than Craftsman but i cant be running to sears twice a week, when work is piling up. I cant comment on other truck brands nor Mayhew. I do have some older Craftsman punches that are a Chrome type finish with a Square hammering end and they are also in my go-to box.

Was it a punch or chisel that broke?

it was a punch.

these are the same punches mac and matco sells and they are lifetime warranty. you can consider them disposable if you wish but that doesn't change the fact that the have a warranty and mayhew has refused to answer how to get it replaced.

Krusty, I work down the street from a wholesale tool distributor. I do bussiness with them often. I will ask for you the best way of communication with them if it helps you out.
