if any of this looks familiar its because Photobucket turned into a turdfest I'm starting a new thread for my garage build.

EDIT: The RS belongs to a buddy, its not mine. I was helping him swap his exhaust.

When we got the house the garage was all studs, had 3 plugs, and 1 light. I just taped and floated the walls (first time trying it) so figured I'd give an update/start over.

Next up is a ceiling and AC.

A little tour.

Nice RS you got there. Looks like you got a nice project on the shop. What's all your plans for it?

The RS is a buddy's.

Plans:
1. install 2x12 joists with a 10 foot raised section for the lift. The ceiling is 8ft and the middle part above the lift will be about 9 ft. It just makes it a little better for getting tall cars in the air at full height with the maxjax.
2. insulate the ceiling and figure out where i want my lights
3. sheetrock the ceiling.
4. tape and float everything.
5. texture/paint
6. install lights
7. install AC unit
8. Build a car :D

The 10ft span with the strong back removed from the left ceiling joists so I can install the 2x12's

Had to get creative to keep the garage door opener and hose reel suspended. that rig is temporary. obviously.

made a template for the ends so I can maximize surface area contact with the rafter and joists.

Here is the old 2x8's beside the new 2x12's. they cut the ends too short and too shallow. the red marks are where the top plate ends so its no wonder they were all cracking under their own weight.

Hopefully I'll get all this lumber in place within a week or so.

i love it when a plan comes together.

I didn't realize how much sag the old joists had until these were up.

left side is the new 2x12, right is the old 2x8. my knee started acting up so I'm gonna need a helper to finish the job. the next step is to sister that 2x12 with another one, do the same on on the right where the 2x8 currently is, and span the whole section with 2x6's on 24" centers front to back.

I was finally able to get a full day in on the project. I have one more 2x12x22 and lots of 2x6x10's to span this gap.

got a couple studs up. the two pairs of sistered 2x12's are liquid nailed and screwed together (while clamped, the screws are just to hold it together while the liquid nail dries).

New tool for the new year! hobart handler 140. I outgrew my flux core 2 voltage setting northern tool entry level unit years ago.

I wanna get another project car next year so this year the focus is on getting the shop sealed and air conditioned. I've been leaning towards a SN95 mustang heavily for a long time now.

Got some C25 for the mig and made my first welds with the new machine.
I need more practice, of course, but I'm very happy with the hobart 140 handler.

We have a very small (not technically to code) 2 car garage, I'm sick of trying to work on our cars on the ground. This may be a good solution.

Appreciate the info. Buddies RS looks good also (from a focus owner)

How i decided to tackle the framing around the gas line. I'm going to sandwich it in between these little strongbacks made from 2x4's. I had the lumber so its the most cost effective solution.

I’m totally new to welding. My father-in-law just retired and gave me a very similar Hobart welder. I’m looking forward to learning. I love the progress on your shop and look forward to seeing some projects coming out of there.

I envy your garage. How's the Maxjack holding out for you also the Hobart Handler 140 as well? I'm looking into getting that welder since I don't weld often or at all.

Thanks! Its taken a few years. Just gotta keep pluggin away.

I love them both. Haven't done more than just practice with the hobart but i'm more than pleased with it. I'm only doing exhaust and body stuff from time to time so I don't need anything too crazy. Its easy to set up and consistent.

The maxjax was a game changer for sure.

After my son "made a hill" of all the tools in my box I decided to add some actual things in the top drawer to keep the stuff in place.

Im finally doing something about the paint vapor situation with this 20" 3300 cfm exhaust fan. i'll be building a little box for 24" paint filters to try and keep the neighbors from murdering me.
