Model # T2602T Bench grinder

Nothing special I guess. It's pre-1985 for sure since that's when M-E got sold off.

I bought a pallet of stuff at an auction two weeks ago and finally got to going through a tote of junk that was on it. I knew it was in there but today was the first day I had where I was able to actually sort it out and deal with it properly. I sort of went through it the day we brought it home when I gave my buddy a few things out of the tote that he wanted.

Anyway, brought it in the house and plugged it in. It works fine but it vibrated badly on that first try. So I took the side covers off and took the wire wheel and stone off and tried again, smooth running motor now. The stone had a huge mud daubers nest on one side that I didn't previously see...

I've done a rudimentary search online for any info on it or a copy of a OM but didn't find much of anything so far. It's a bare bones grinder, most everything on it is missing. The water tray was crushed, no tables or hardware for them or spark guard shield hardware. Making new ones shouldn't be too hard, so maybe those will go on my half mile long list of to-do's.

Overall it's oily and filthy. I think I'll just clean it up some, put two wire wheels on it and call it good.

The drawback is that the mounting holes in the pot metal/aluminum housing have been broken out so mounting is going to require some creativity. Off the top of my head I'm thinking flat or bent strap clamps in the hollow areas of the broken holes held down with lag bolts.

It uses 6" wheels but it spins too fast to use as a knife sharpener (and I doubt that the run-out is good enough). However, with nearly total coverage of the wheels with the housing even using wire wheels might be a problem.

Anyone else have a Shopmate grinder? The one in the picture is not mine but is the same style except both side of the front half of the housing are complete.

Hello. That JC Penney manual is probably as close as you are going to get for now. McGraw Edison (and its predecessors) made power tools under different names for different markets. It might have been McGraw Edison, Shopmate, PowerHouse, Toastmaster or Manning-Bowman. It might have been orange, silver or yellow. They were also sold by KMart and JC Penney under their own model numbers (I have pictures of them). I don't have this grinder, but I have many other McGraw Edison power tools, including drills, sanders, a circular saw, jig saw, planer, router and a lathe. The drill, jig saw and sander were my first power tools from my parents when I was 13 or so, and I collected the others later.

I've seen probably a dozen of those boxy ones on marketplace the past few months. A few of them at flea markets and the rest individuals. Various branding, too. I always thought they looked kind of hard to use for some things since the wheels are so shrouded and there's no place between the wheel and motor to roll parts into.

I haved owned and used this grinder for many years. I use a wirebrush wheel on one side but did not put the guard back on (still a bit limited but works for most jobs).

It is now on the bench for repairs. The shaft has a play and moves left to right (1/8” play) because the washers are worn out (see picture 2). The play has grinding wheel touch the guide. Anyone know how I would fix this or is this something I have to take to a repair shop.
