Measuring tape with internal measures

Hi guys,

I've narrowed down my choice to these two:

BMI 404 In-Out the 3 meters version.

404-in-out.jpg

I LOVE the fact that it goes from 1...2...3... and then the internal measures can be read the same way/orientation as the tape. I HATE when the internal measures are UPSIDE DOWN compared to the tape reading orientation.

and this one:

Stabila BM 30W (only exists in 3 meters long)

Don't know about the "internal reading orientation" issue though...

So far, I already have a Stabila level I'm very happy with, so I have a good opinion of Stabila products so far. However, I occasionally use the BMI 429 which is also a joy to use.

The BMI is 13 mm wide so might be not as stiff as the Stabila which is 16 mm wide.
The BMI doesn't have any pocket clip

If you guys have any feedback on either one of them, let me hear it !

Ahhh it seems this Russian site is answering my question

index.php

Surprisingly, if you look at the official Stabila picture, it "should" be upside down. However, the image taken by a Stabila user seems ok...

Ok. Stabila measures tapes are made in China. BMI ones are made in Germany. Hmmm.

:pimpflash

I'm not really drawing that many circles so the 405's feature might not really needed.

Monte showed this Garant tape in a previous post:

Still can't find any dealer to buy from...
Monte, it says there is a "push-pull" feature. What is that exactly ?
Do you prefer the Garant over the BMI 405 Viso ?

Thanks mate.

push-pull means it has no lock. You simply push it or pull the tape and it stays there.. (or not :))
i would take the original BMI because it has a lock.

Sorry Jim,

It was a bit difficult to explain.
But I want to avoid having to read the "inside" measure being upside down when you hold the tape:

Makes sense ?

So the end of the tape case is the measurement showing on the inside?

I'm a carpenter and have never used such a tape. :dunno:

Most people on here are probably smarter than I am when it comes to technical knowledge. I'm a book smart kind of guy; wish I had more technical skill.

That being said, part of the posting experience for me is an enjoyment in interacting with a lot of the folks on here and exchanging ideas. Also, since I know less, I always have a lot of questions to ask.

can't read the numbers on them pics to figure it out by yerself?

not at all, it's only 6 inches or so... ;)

(tapes in pic are metric, eh!)

there's nothing wrong with quoting Bull, being "book smart"(hey, i'm more booksmartish than i should be however) or "whatever smart" unless you're not applying any kind of smartness to a problem and/or being curious enough to care about learning new stuff. only if you cannot understand it by yourself should ya start askin' around!

that's, to me, what counts. or should. YKmMV. :)

Piss on this type of system. Use a regular tape and just bend it into the corner! Be doing it that way for 20 years!

I kinda thought I would see someone else post up a Stanley top read by now. But if you can find one, they've got the feature you want. Just in inches. Here's a Stanley 33-912.

Apologies to the OP if this is one that "didn't make the cut" when he was making his decisions since it's not a "top read" but the Hultafors Talmeter is very unique and I LOVE mine. It makes extremely accurate "inside" measurements. Didn't know about it until about six months ago and it's all I carry now. They used to have a metric/imperial version, but it was discontinued, but i work where everything is metric. Of course different trades have different needs. Just FYI...
