Quick thought....It seems like it is harder to finder these length drill bit sets so I got to thinking, I can get a cheap used set of jobber length precision twist, norseman, etc. on ebay and cut them and re sharpen them to mechanic/machine length and have the needed length bits when working in tight spaces, has anyone done this or is it more work then it is worth? thoughts...

I have when I needed too but sets are pretty easy to come by.

Why ARE most all drill bits jobber length?

You'd think mechanics value space over most things, I wonder how Snap-On does with them because I don't think all the tool trucks carry mechanic's length.

Mechanics length bits are regularly available on eBay. Tool truck brands. Or Norseman. They're sometimes referred to as stubby. Drill Hog USA sells a wide selection of bits. I have a few of their impact adapters and they're HF quality. Has anyone used their drill bits? Like really used them over and over and not just once.

Can you point to some Mac or Matco part numbers? I think they just carry the standard Irwin jobber length stuff outside of extractor sets.

That sounds like a lot of work.

Zoro has sales periodically. Here is a thread in the Hot Deals section.

Here's a search for Machine Length Drill Bits on Zoro's site.

automatic Screw machine also known as stubby length are shorter than mechanics length. They are what I use for limited access situations.

For limited access I use spotting drills, they are short like the screw machine drill bits, perhaps even a bit shorter
