Mechanic toolbelt

I have thought about this for a while, has anybody ever used a toolbelt for mechanic work like an electrician would wear? Most of the time I can pull the truck right up the machine I'm working on, but sometimes I can't. I have the tote tray from my krl in the truck and I use it sometimes. Just want your thoughts.

I got this for Christmas last year-

I always mean to use it, but never have. Its stuck to the inside of the hutch with a broken Craftsman 3/8" 8mm bit socket stuck on it. Been meaning to return it.

I'd say not a good idea for several reasons:

Almost guaranteed to scratch a finish no matter how careful you are.

More stuff to deal with when going under a vehicle.

Likely to catch on things under the vehicle, or get caught under a crawler wheel.

I'd say if you need tools handy, make up a tool roll that will hold what you need, and load it as you need them. Make it from denim, and pad the outer main layer of the roll and you can unroll it on a fender and not be too worried about scratches.

Not quite sure how to best deal with sockets, that would be partly driven by how you store them. if you use rail and clips you could make one pocket to fit one rail and make that the "center" of the roll...

Too bulky to make it work. I have tried it and I resorted back to the Magnetic Tool Trays.

Good idea but it just isn't really workable.

Hmmm, a mechanic wearing a toolbelt is about like a carpenter dragging his KRL around on the jobsite. Some things just don't go together.

i keep a couple of toolbags in my truck, one very small one that wont hold enough tools to be heavy, and a larger one with a shoulder strap for those places you just cant get the truck close enough to.

like the upper floor of a building, with no elevator, no lights, and no parking in downtown chicago.

opps, whadda mean a 31 series battery fell down the elevator shaft... how'd that happen?

For years I would put an old ceramic speaker magnet in my pocket and take a handful of nails/screws/hardware or whatever I was installing or removing and stick it to the outside of the pocket. Far easier to get to, no pointy objects in close proximity of critical equipment and no skewered fingernails while digging in tight pockets. This is a quick solution for doing small jobs up on a ladder or in a confined spot when putting on a tool belt is overkill or impractical. And it's free.
