I'm in need of a solid workbench for mechanic type work, what are you guys using... metal or wood tops? I'm leaning towards metal, but I'm interested to see what you guys recommend
All of my benches (about 25 linear feet in total) are thick plywood tops (two layers of 3/4") faced with thick battleship linoleum. Very, very tough, doesn't damage components being worked on, and can be belt sanded down and oiled every decade or so!
Hard to get good BS Lino these days though....
Depends on what type of work you're going to do. I have a couple steel benches and a couple wood. I also have some mobile steel tables for when I want to work on a car up on the lift. I use the steel bench the most because it has a vise on it and won't catch fire when I weld. I coated my wood benches with lots of eurathane so they are easy to clean.
Just like you use a different tool for different jobs, your bench(s) is(are) the same. For what you say you're doing either will work, but I would recommend it has a steel frame to take any abuse. If you plan on torching, or welding on it then get or make a steel top.
Sams and costco have/had very good benches for $199 . Very sturdy with a butcher block top . I suppose you can cover it with metal , but not sure if its necessary.
