Mechanix gloves- keep going or switch brands

Looking to get a new set of gloves. I have the original Mechanix ones, they're 7 years old. They finally started getting some holes and won't clean up anymore.

Are they still a good choice? Or are there any newcomers that are worth trying?

Superior gloves are my favorite brand now. Many made in Canada. Excellent value. Got mine from Amazon, a pair of their impact absorbing leather gloves as well as some cut and puncture resistant knit gloves.

Here's a video showing their impact testing:

The originals do not hold up like they used to. Not at all. Bad. I had a pair start to wear out within a couple weeks. It just so happened the Amazon seller sent me an email asking how they were, and I told them. They sent me free of charge the Mechanix 4X, and those are going strong after a year or so of use.

The absorption at the end was kinda cool but I don't think other gloves would tear or fail either. Without a point of reference it's, well, pointless.

Yep! Not everyday use, but most weekends and mostly worked hard and put away wet.

Probably like $20 or so, anything around what these were new.

How old were the original ones you had? Just trying to figure out if they've changed since these were made.

Sounds like they might have gone downhill then? I know these were China made.

The HF comparable ones are $15, may as well just get the Mechanix ones again.

I have two pair of Mechanix gloves going on a year now and they're still in good shape. Any "name brand" pair of gloves should last a few years "in your hands" I'm guessing. This April I bought a 12 pack of these gloves to use for professional landscaping and diy wrenching. They are only about $1.15 per pair and I'm only on my 4th pair, plus gave a few away, they're that good. They are the exact same as Gorilla Grip Gloves from Home Depot. The only ones that have ever lasted for me are the tan snap on gloves. And even those are worn out after 1.5 years.

Mechanix used to be good. I got a pair of them 15 years ago and they lasted long enough for me to lose them before they wear out. Now I'm lucky to get a few months of light use before they start coming apart. Fast fit, mpact, does matter they just don't hold up anymore. I'm interested in some of the youngstown gloves, they get decent reviews but they're more expensive. It's almost getting to the point where I'll wait for the hf ones to go "on sale" and just buy those knowing they won't last instead of spending more money and hoping they will.

7 years? Stick with those.

I've been extremely lucky to get 9 months out of my current pair. It's usually around 1-3 months.

Pretty sure that they are now made in Vietnam anyways ive stumbled across a few very well made fakes in the past. Identical other than the palm material which is sightly shiny in appearance and they don't last nearly as long.
Ive got originals and 4x and they both take a beating but i reckon the 4x are a little better..

I gave up on the original Mechanix gloves a long time ago 'cuase I'd only get 2 or 3 months out of them using them most days at work and I'd use them till they had no finger tips left.
IMO, getting 7 years outta any gloves is not working that hard....you could buy pretty much anything and you'll be fine.

Order a few different brands from Amazon and keep the ones that feel the best. I'll be surprised if Superior gloves don't float your boat.

I had good luck with them until my last 2 pair - the first ones ripped out along the right hand thumb web seam within a month, leaving a flap of material to wedge under my palm (not comfortable, not protective at all) then the ones I got to replace them ripped out the same way on BOTH hands. In about 2 weeks.

IMO their quality isn't what it used to be.

I now get the deerskin ones (probably made from the elusive Quangdong Province Deer and sewn with genuine Szechuan cotton thread by skilled "indentured labor" hands :lol: ) which, while they are not as grippy or cool as the Mechanix ones, seem to hold up pretty well. The upside is I can get them "smallish" and they stretch to fit my hands.

What kind of jobs are you guys wearing there gloves for? I try to wear the latex gloves if i know I will be in something with alot of grease or oil but I really don't even like wearing them. I have a hard time doing things in gloves.

I wear latex for grease/ oily stuff, Mechanix where I need cut protection or padding in case I slip off of something.

I had a pair of pricey Mechanix gloves, that lasted only about two years, before the seams in the fingers started splitting.

Now have the black "Hardy" gloves from Harbor freight, that hold up pretty good, but were only about $7 a pair.

HF gloves are the bomb. I buy 3-4 pairs at a time and use them for general purpose, riding my ATV and light warmth. Seem to be lasting forever!
